Shadow Chancellor Steven Andrews returned to Cornwall, where he went door-to-door and met with voters on the streets of Falmouth. There, he discussed:

Culture
"The Cornish culture and its language are beautiful and something worth not only preserving but allowing to develop. Your culture and language here are much like a garden plot that ought to be tended to, and they have a chance to bear fruit both in enriching your lives and in attracting people to visit. To these ends, the Conservative Party will work within the Cornish Assembly to preserve and promote the Cornish language and culture both through teaching in schools and through a programme of cultural events which will be open for the public to attend.  And we will work to promote your culture to the world.

Environment
"Cornwall is not London. Too many MPs are too eager to jam one-size-fits-all solutions into place, as we have seen with the latest Transport Act. The Tories recognize that, as we move forward and work to protect the environment, the towns of Cornwall will have different infrastructure requirements than big cities do. That's why we will work to ensure that proper variations can be put in place for rural areas to the currently-mooted environmental mandates, and why we will exempt emergency services vehicles from these mandates.

"We will also work to ensure that, over time, the Cornish Assembly acquires the powers it needs to enact regulations which are more appropriate to the conditions of Cornwall while still protecting the environment...for example, perhaps supporting and promoting rooftop solar generation and local power storage so that towns here can be increasingly self-sufficient during times of bad weather and that you might avoid power cuts that would otherwise affect you. But achieving these goals will require your support both for the new Cornish Assembly as well as in the Senate elections."

Education
"The Tories stand for responsible advancement in education policy. In Cornwall, we propose to create new grammar schools while allowing for curriculum innovations that promote the survival, development, and flourishing of Cornish culture...for example, by allowing various arts classes to focus on local traditions rather than getting a copy-paste of what is being taught in London or Birmingham. We will also work to ensure that Cornwall has appropriate monitoring systems in place to assure both accountability for overall academic performance and to ensure that our students are not unwittingly exposed to extremist ideas as has occasionally happened in the big cities due to government inattention."

Steven Andrews, MP for Croydon South
