Ladies and gentlemen,
Let me start by saying that all of our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by the serious flooding across southern England. We are committed to working with the government to ensure an effective response, and to pressing the government for answers about the lack of appropriate dredging.
As parts of our nation are experiencing a serious crisis which the government - with military support - needs to handle, it is not appropriate at this time for the motion of no confidence which we have tabled to proceed. The Labour Party is therefore withdrawing the motion of no confidence with immediate effect in order to allow the government to focus all of its resources on providing relief to those affected by this catastrophic natural disaster.
The motion will be tabled once again after an appropriate period, should it be the case that the government continues to lack a credible majority in the House of Commons.
We maintain our opposition to the Government and continue to believe that a general election is in the national interest: at a time of emergency, however, it is appropriate to hold the line and allow officials the breathing space that they need in order to manage the ongoing crisis.

I'm super super busy until mid Saturday - apologies for that all. But I want to at least get marking out the way so the AVs will have room to do other stuff until my return. That said, I'm still short on time so will be short and sweet.
Honestly, I think people would have felt you were justified if you still went on for the kill at this point - if anything the floods have reinforced the need for a government able to command a majority in the House of Commons, but people still see this move as very mature and statesmanlike; if anything it warms them to Suchet that little bit more. It was the kind of gesture you needed to make and a massive improvement from your backbench 'who cares if someone died?' days.
