MP for Cynon Valley (1992-present)

Born to a Belgian immigrant father and a Welsh mother, Sylviane lost her father at the age of 2 and her mother remarried in Wales. Her mother and stepfather raised her along with 4 children of their own. Her stepfather being a miner and her mother working part time in a local bakery, Sylviane grew up in a household that was working class. While her stepfather and mother were casually active in politics through unions and Labour Party, they did not consider it as particularly important. Until the Miners Strike and the Thatcher regime's response, Sylviane was also not that interested in politics but during the strike she joined the Labour Party and the union movement, she was also active in coordinating with "Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners". She has gotten active in LGBT politics and union politics from the beginning but also active in protests against the European Community and its further reiterations believing it harmed the workers and was actually harming actual case for internationalism with capitalist and neoliberal policies. She was first elected as a local councillor and then elected to parliament in 1992 after actively involved in deselection of Ann Clwyd the local MP back then. She was opposed to Blair-Brown clique and rebelled against their governments on numerous occasions with passionate opposition to Iraq war, IDs and more. During her opposition to Iraq and else, she has coordinated with Liberal Democrats and Greens significantly and her view towards the LDs and other parties has softened a bit. Even now she has some people in LDs and Greens where she considers dear friends. She has supported Ari Suchet for leadership, albeit a bit hesitantly, she didn't agree with her "rabid pro-Europeanism" and what she considered capitulations to Bertie, Ward and Manning troika. Surprisingly she approved enthusiastically supported the coalition agreement, saying "while it may not be the ideal deal, but it contains elements that suits the Labour movement in general and that those which may not suit them we can vote against it in the Parliament". She was particularly vary of STV and supported amendments to add a referendum to the STV.

Welcome @john-bufton. I'm afraid that membership of smaller parties is restricted. You would need to choose to join either Labour or the Conservatives. As Sittingbourne & Sheppey is a Conservative seat, perhaps you'd like to join them?

DE GRUCHY, Roger William (b. Oct. 4, 1950) has been the Member of Parliament for Chelsea and Fulham since the constituency's establishment in 2010 and for Kensington and Chelsea from 1999 (when he was elected in a by-election). He was born in Jersey to Cmdr. William Blake De Gruchy and his wife Mildred Anne (née Stewart) but moved to London at the age of 6 when his father was posted there. He was educated at Dulwich College from 1971-1981 before reading to a double first in Commerce and English Literature at Oxford followed by a Juris Doctor from the London School of Economics in 1987.

De Gruchy chose never to enter into a legal practice, opting instead to enter the world of trading, first entering the London Metal Exchange through the American firm, Drexel Burnham Lambert. He worked for them from 1987-1990 before he founded his own firm, De Gruchy and Spence. In 1998, De Gruchy retired from the exchange, having amassed a significant person fortune, and turned his attention more fully to electoral politics, though he had been involved with the Conservative Party from his earliest days at Oxford.

In 1999, after the death of Alan Clark, De Gruchy campaigned successfully in the by-election in his home constituency of Kensington and Chelsea, narrowly beating out his friend and sometime-rival Michael Portillo for the nomination. De Gruchy has been a MP ever since.

He has served in the shadow cabinet under William Hague as Shadow Transport Secretary (September 2000-3 May 2002), although their relationship was tenuous due to personal difficulties; he then served under Iain Duncan Smith, whom he supported in the leadership election, as Shadow Environment Secretary (3 May 2002-15 March 2004). Finally, De Gruchy served as Shadow Secretary of State for Industry (15 March 2004-6 May,2005) and Shadow Secretary of State for the Home Department (6 May 2005-7 December, 2005) under Michael Howard. He refused, flatly, to serve in David Cameron's shadow cabinet or in cabinet and fulfilled, instead, a roll on the backbenches, including as Executive Secretary of the 1922 Committee (18 March 2008-10 December 2011).
