The Foreign Secretary would make a good fantasy writer. He said we were against a referendum on the single currency – we are for a referendum vocally. He said we’re against the Maastricht Treaty – we’ve made it clear we would wait to see the treaty before extending any support or opposition.
And now his hypocrisy has shown on top of his mistruths. He hasn’t come up with one good reason why it is fine to have a referendum on the single currency, but not on the inevitable significant constitutional change that will follow the Maastricht Treaty.
When he and the Prime Minister pretended Labour were against a referendum on the single currency, they said we ‘refused to give the people a voice.’ Now they’re against a referendum on Maastricht, they are ‘leading’ – with no explanation given for this discrepancy or hypocrisy. This chaotic government aren’t even leading their own party on this matter, let alone the British public. This is one reason we need to put these questions to the British people. And if we do, I look forward to putting the Tories’ views on Europe to the test, as I know the truth will win out.
