My solidarity goes out to the government and, of course, particularly to my opposite in the Foreign Secretary after this heinous plot has been exposed – it really seems like he has struggled to catch a break since taking office.
It is good news that all seems well, and credit goes out to our fantastic security services for that. Ms. Lynch and Mr. Hume’s contributions on this matter are invaluable, even if they both come from different sides of the aisle. I am glad the government is determined to take action and cross party talks have reopened: the Labour Party always made it clear it wanted to reopen cross party talks. The government and William Croft in particular must start engaging with Northern Ireland’s nationalist community in good faith to unite Northern Ireland effectively against the scourge of terrorism. These grudges and he said she saids are much too trivial on a matter like this now.
What leaves me most concerned is that in the middle of a major national security situation, there has been more chaos on Europe in the Cabinet which has left the government less able to govern when the country needs it most. I have sympathy for the Tory whips - and I won't pretend that diversity of opinion does not exist on our benches - but this really takes the cake.
