Parliamentary Career: MP for Hull West (1987-Present); Member, Education Select Committee (1990 - 1992)
Bio: Born to Jeremiah Gould and June Lockhart (nee Wilson) on 9th May 1945, Amelia was the sixth and youngest child. Jeremiah worked at sea on Hull’s trawler fleet, while June worked in one of the onshore fish filleting factories. She grew up in poverty but studied hard at school, spending most of her free time in the library, and secured a scholarship to study at Hull University.
All of Amelia’s brothers joined their father working in Hull’s trawler fleet. Her oldest brother, David, sailed on the St Romanus from Hull on 10th January 1968, and Amelia never saw him again. He was one of 58 crew members who died in the Hull triple trawler tragedy.
A trawler safety campaign grew out of tragedy, led by Lillian Bilocca. Amelia and her mother dedicated effort and time to the campaign, leading drives for petition signatures. The campaign succeeded in improving safety standards in the fishing industry.
Amelia’s experiences drove her to recognise the importance of holding the powerful to account, and elevating the voices of those who are usually ignored. After university, she became a journalist for the Hull Daily Mail and the Yorkshire Post.
The MP for Hull West indicated he was stepping down for health reasons in 1987. Persuaded by former ‘Headscarf Revolutionaries’ to stand, Amelia ran for the Labour candidacy and won. She has remained on the backbenches since 1987, and was a vocal critic of the previous leadership.
In her personal life, Amelia met David Lockhart at university. They married in 1973. She has two children, William and Phillip.
