I think it an absolute disgrace that Margaret Thatcher has been given an hereditary Earldom. Not only has she resided over a decade of deindustrialisation and despair, but the Government granting her the title is riddled with scandal and disgrace. I am utterly surprised she accepted an honour on the advise of a charlatan like Marcus Drummond-McBeith.

My erstwhile congratulations to Dame Thatcher for her elevation to the House of Lords and for her peerage. Her service to this country, having dragged it out of a post-war rut which belied its natural place in the sun, has now been rewarded and she, and her descendants, will have a role to play forever more in shaping our country's path. Dame Thatcher was not a perfect Prime Minister; but she was what the country needed, and I am thankful that her voice will continue to be an important one as we begin to look forward to a new millennium.

Some very strong and effective statements on Militant from the Tories in this round of the general cycle, which awards them the win, although calling them "communist" is probably a step too far and blunts the impact of the attack.
Complaining about conspiracy theories did not age well, however, and Mr. Brown has a couple of very effective statements holding the Government to account.
XP for Carpenter and Brown.

This Government's continued avoidance of scrutiny is very alarming. With the notable exceptions of the Chancellor and the Minister for Health, Ministers are failing to promptly and directly answer important questions put to them at the dispatch box by the opposition. While I realize the questions that I and other Labour MPs may be asking the Government may be annoying--it is incumbent upon the Government to answer the concerns of the people's representatives in a prompt and straightforward manner. After all the scandals of the previous Tory Government, one would think that the new Prime Minister would be keen to embrace greater transparency--but I regret to say that this Prime Minister and this Government seems committed to maintaining the status quo of avoiding Parliamentary oversight. We will not stand for this--and neither will the British people.
(OOC note: Please pretend I included "Education Secretary" in my statement of responsive Ministers. <3 you Ege)

It seems that Eastwood is likely to need a new Member of Parliament, as of the resignation of Mr Campbell. Despite his election only being four years ago, he has managed to cram a lot into a short time in Parliament - very few people can claim to be a failed Home Secretary, disgraced Foreign Secretary, and now an under-one-term MP. The Tories have failed Eastwood, and residents know that "Labour can't win here!" - only the Liberal Democrats provide a strong local voice. As a Welsh MP myself, I understand that the need for strong local voices in Scottish & Welsh parliamentary seats is enormously strong, to be heard in a parliament dominated by English Conservatives. With the Liberal Democrats, Eastwood can move past the disaster of Mr Campbell's term, and elect a strong local champion, for a party that believe in putting people first.

Brown appeared outside the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford within his constituency, giving brief remarks to the local/regional Press along side hospital administrators:
I am proud to be here at Princess Royal Hospital today to celebrate its designation as an NHS trust! I and The Wrekin are forever grateful to Mr. Croft who served as Health Secretary, for working closely with me across party lines to see that our local and regional community has the NHS resources it needs to ensure that our families are kept healthy through whatever life throws our way. With this hard-fought designation, this community will have a greater say over how this hospital is run and will also be able to provide even better care to all those here in Telford, The Wrekin, and indeed, throughout Shorpshire.
As national headlines have been dominated by tales of espionage, intrigue, and backroom dealings, I'm glad that Mr. Croft and I were able to cut through all the nonsense to work on this issue that is very important to Telford and that will do good here in this community and this region. I want to assure you that I will continue to fight hard as your MP to ensure that your tax money is used in ways that helps our community and ensures the well-being of your families. I will always fight hard for the people of The Wrekin and Telford--and I am delighted to have played some small part in ensuring that the health and wellness of our region is secured and strengthened for decades to come.

In harbouring a fugitive from justice and then illegally smuggling him out of the UK the Government of South Africa have committed a grave injustice, it is absolutely right that the Government have taken the steps we have to freeze South African bank accounts in London to make it clear that this behaviour is unacceptable. I urge the South African Government to return Marcus to the United Kingdom's custody so he can face trial for his alleged crimes before we have to engage in more sanctions.

I think I'm among the vast majority of people across our country who are frustrated and exasperated by the news of Myercough's quid pro cool deal with Yugoslav government. Aubyn Myercough promised an end to Tory conspiracy, pyschodrama, and treason when he assumed the premiership and then turned around only a few months later to negotiate a sweetheart deal in order to attempt to resolve an embarrassing, illegal scandal perpetrated by members of his party less than a year ago. Ordinary people have been tired of the Tory economic project for a while now and we certainly won't tolerate this disgraceful backroom scheming and wrangling - especially with pressing, material issues to address as the Tory recession spirals further out of control and our neighbors and friends suffer from want and despair. It's time for a General Election so we can put this shameful, disastrous era behind us with a forward looking Labour Government.

Red Tommy says with confidence that he speaks for the "majority of the country" when he says that the nation should be fixed on whatever cooked up scandal suits Labour's narrative this week. I think we all know what the vast majority of British people really care about: having a good job, being able to take care of their children, and keeping their families safe - and in all three areas, the Conservatives are delivering. Labour doesn't want to talk about the substantive issues of the day, because they know the offer they're making to the British people simply isn't resonating. Let's look at one in particular: HIV-AIDS. The Labour Party has been virtually silent on the greatest public health crisis of our time. In contrast, this Conservative Government has put together one of the most ambitious, comprehensive, and aggressive plans to eradicate the disease in the whole of the Western world. We're racing to find a cure, investing more to care for those who have the disease, and guaranteeing that every British person has access to a test. That's what the British people care about: real, tangible action.
I'll leave the conspiracy theories and political spin to the Labour Party. I, and my colleagues in the Conservative Party, are far too busy doing the real work the British people expect and deserve.

I'm not even going to bother engaging with whatever psychodrama the Conservative Party have cooked up now to distract the British public from their own sheer incompetence.
What I will address is the bare faced lie told by William Croft that Labour had been 'silent' on the issue of HIV-AIDS. While the Conservatives have had a revolving door of Health Ministers that changed tact on the greatest issue of our time, it was my predecessor and myself in the Shadow Health brief that have been questioning the Conservatives. Far from being silent, we have been offering credible and constructive opposition: commending the government where they have got it right, but asking valid questions and making critiques where they've been necessary. That is the approach the Labour Party will continue to adopt, and I make no apology for it.
