When you're a mayor and you have a problem you blame the provincial government. If you are provincial government and you have a problem you blame the federal government. We don't blame the Queen any more, so once in a while we might blame the Americans. -Jean Chrétien

FIRST LOOK: MAULTY/MACDONALD LABOUR LEADERSHIP PLATFORM

[Image: latest?cb=20120624231127&path-prefix=protagonist]
Ben Maulty and Belinda MacDonald, seen here at their campaign launch, are running on a joint ticket for leader and deputy leader of the Labour Party.

Private Eye has been lucky enough to receive a copy of the Ben Maulty/Belinda MacDonald Labour Leadership platform. We're pleased to sum it up as follows:

Maulty/MacDonald: "End tax and spend!"

Leaked papers reveal bizarre man who was almost Prime Minister

He isn't a doctor, so who knows why he's wearing this.

Leaked papers today revealed a bizarre side to Ben Maulty, who only narrowly lost the Labour leadership to Elizabeth Tanner two years ago. The papers - thought to have been seized as part of the recent inquiry in to Solomon Trevitt's activities as a Minister of State in the Department for Education - suggest that far from the serious and sober approach to politics he projected in public, the former Home Secretary fancied himself a contributor to Private Eye

There were too many elements to this bizarre leak to cover, but one caught our attention. Mr Maulty had a famously difficult relationship with the former Chancellor, Sean Manning, who ran Elizabeth Tanner's election campaign. As part of that campaign, Mr Maulty allegedly commissioned - or put together himself, who knows - a fake election advert featuring Mr Manning. And then hung it on the wall during a tense meeting to discuss leaks from the election campaigns.

The purpose - or joke - behind this eludes us. We would suggest against quitting the day job - if he had one any more.
