Shadow Foreign Secretary Padrig Havard gave a speech in favor of Conservative party Candidate Edward Timpson in the upcoming by-election

"Like many of you I am concerned about the state of the government presently a government whose most recent budget horrible mishandles the looming recession. The Labour party is continually putting out pie in the sky aspirations like their transportation plans which they leaked, while planning to cut spending to the NHS because we can't afford it, when in fact what we can't afford is there over zealous spending plan which focuses more on partisan politics then what is best for the country. What we need are people like Edward Timpson in office who will vote for budgets like the one this party presented, a budget which keeps the NHS funded, a budget whose tax cuts will spur the economy through the recession and a budget focused on increasing consumers spending power keeping businesses afloat through the looming recession. And so now the question before us is this do we want a MP who will stand up for businesses and consumers and help guide us through the recession like Edward Timpson and the Conservatives will do or do we want to continue the status quo which has worked for nobody and will make this recession longer then it ought to be?"

Beth Hunter gave a speech alongside the Crewe and Nantwitch candidate Tamsin Dunwoody:

"I want to thank you all for coming here today, in Crewe, home of the Pyms Lane Bentley factory and many other industries that have helped power this county's growth in the past and will be home to industries that will continue to bring prosperity to Crewe, Nantwitch and beyond for many decades to come. I'm here alongside our fantastic candidate Tamsin, who will be an excellent representative for the constituency and will ensure that not only is your voice heard by a dedicated MP, but that it is heard through her by me as Prime Minister to do what is best for the people of Crewe and Nantwitch. She will also bring a valuable and experienced voice on the issue of the environment an ever increasingly urgent issue in our time.

First let's address the elephant in the room, well one of them regardless, it is no secret that the economy will be slowing down as a result of the greed and avarice of those at the top of the banking sector. This presents us with a challenge, one that we will meet with an effective plan for investment and by supporting our public services. No one will be left behind once our economy rebounds under a Labour government, no one who has lost their job, seen their business suffer, or is a teacher, nurse and doctor is responsible for this crash and we will not abandon our people. The people of Britain should be safe in the knowledge that the government will be there for them in times of need and will guide our economy back to the form that it was in earlier in the decade, consistent growth that will fuel our public services. This will be done, yes with infrastructure investment, that the Tories are too short sighted to see will not only jump start our economy, but will be the first step of our ambitious plan to ensure Britain grows in a sustainable way, both environmentally and economically. It also means that steps will be taken to ensure those that crashed the economy with their recklessness do not simply get to ride into the sunset, are held to account for their recklessness and that effect and tough regulation is brought in to ensure no one else suffers due to the greed of the few at the top.

I've heard that certain Tory MPs have been going around Crewe claiming that our plans for sustained and effective investment in the economy will mean that public services will suffer, even claiming that we had plans to cut the NHS. I find it amusing that a person from the party that left our great institutions such as the NHS in ruins in 1997 would even dare to make such an argument, after we rebuilt the NHS from the smouldering ruins they left it in. Our public services are safest in the hands of the people, with a party that works on behalf of the people and with the people's needs at the front of their minds at all time, that is the Labour Party and I know Tamsin will absolutely embody that in parliament. I promise you, the government under my leadership will not only continue the investment that has led to massive falls in waiting times and improvements in education across the country, but will also deliver the investment this country needs to get back to business. Nothing is too good for the people of this country and we shall deliver wherever you live not just here in Crewe or in Nantwitch, but across this country. No where will be left behind when the recovery comes.

Now we must, unfortunately address the other elephant in the room. That is the presence of the disgusting, vile and frankly inhuman views being espoused by the leader of the BNP in his visit here. If your response to the tragic events in Pakistan, is not deep and sincere sympathy with the people who have suffered from an unprecedented terror attack, but instead to use it to drive a wedge between decent people based on their religion then I'm afraid there is no way I can sufficiently describe the gap that must be missing where your heart should be. British people, of all religions and all backgrounds are fundamentally decent, kind, compassionate and warm, our collective values are embodied in those traits and I look forward to complete and utter rejection of the BNP's candidate here. Muslims are not our enemy, they are our friends, colleagues, neighbours, partners and our family. When we look at who's responsible for the horrific events in Pakistan, it is a minority, within a minority of Muslims, a group of sick and twisted individuals who can exist within any religion. We do not make ourselves safer by making an enemy of an entire religion, or by discriminating against them through our security policy or our immigration policy.

Across the UK and indeed here in Crewe there will be many people of Pakistani descent, worried about their families and loved ones. Their pain is our pain, we must embrace them as we would any other people grieving after such a horrible event. Not push them away. I have faith that the people of Crewe and Nantwitch and indeed people across the UK will do the right thing and act with decency and compassion, rather than with hate. Ours is a country made stronger, richer and brighter by diversity as all countries are, all of us should take this opportunity, here and now, to show what kind of country Britain is, not the one of Mr Griffin's imagination, a small petty, hate filled one, but the one I spoke about and have lived in, a warm, decent and compassionate land, that embraces those in their time of need."

Dunk MacMahon Free Event - Mainstreeting (Crewe and Nantwich)

Sir Duncan MacMahon spoke to voters in Crewe and Nantwich along with the Lib Dem candidate Elizabeth Shenton and other local volunteers.

On the Lib Dem promise to voters, Sir Dunk said “if you want a strong, committed champion for your local community, vote for Elizabeth Shenton. If you want someone who will work to clean up our politics, and end the broken two-party system that leaves so many voices ignored and so many votes wasted, vote for Elizabeth Shenton and the Liberal Democrats. If you want a champion of civil liberties, of environmental protection, of strong public services, of a peaceful foreign policy, vote Liberal Democrat.”

On the BNP appearance in the constituency, Sir Dunk said “we have to be honest - the BNP, and Nick Griffin, are an awful awful organisation. But the way to fight them isn’t by whining about them or whinging about them. It’s by exposing them as the charlatans that they are. They don’t offer anything productive. Their policies won’t build new homes or hire more police officers - they’re just offering hatred and division. They’re peddling a con. And we need to call them out for that. And we need to be clear that the Muslim community is welcome, that they are entitled to the exact same rights and liberties as anyone else, that scapegoating a whole population like they want to do plays into the hands of the terrorists such as the Taliban.”

On public services, Sir Dunk said “the Liberal Democrats are going to campaign on a big programme of investment in public services, and that includes much needed investment in places such as Crewe and Nantwich. One policy we’ll implement is moving towards equal funding for mental health care, which has long been grievously underfunded. We’ll move towards consolidating social care with healthcare, creating a fairer and more reliable guarantee of care provision when we need it. And we’ll implement a Pupil Premium - money, no-strings-attached, that schools will receive for each disadvantaged or vulnerable child they look after, to level out educational inequalities.”

Free Event 1 (of 2) - Speech in Crewe and Nantwich

Well, hello there Crewe and Nantwich! It is an honor to have a part of your day to share the message of our Conservative values and how they matter for each and everyone of you, in your everyday lives. With the level of attention being poured into this constituency, I don't need to tell you just how important it is to get out and vote in the by-election. But I do need to share what the differences are between the major parties and how a Conservative MP, Edward Timpson, will benefit this community and others like it across Great Britain.

You have the opportunity to send a clear and bold message to the rest of Cheshire, to the rest of the North West of England, to the rest of the United Kingdom. That message is not one of rejecting Labour, but rather of your decision to embrace a commonsense, bold and forward-looking Conservative Party that is on your side! On each major issue, Edward Timpson will join MPs like Elaine Ashbury and myself, to promote reforms and solutions that have been neglected by this current Government.

Whether its their tax increases amidst a recession, their lack of interest in education, the vagueness of their climate proposals, or their willingness to hand over your governance to Brussels - Labour is only on their own team. But our policies in these areas put us squarely on your side with real solutions, and I'd like to share our commitments to you here in Crewe and Nantwich today.

When it comes to the budget, the difference between our records couldn't be more stark. I am proud to have led a shadow budget that showed an eagerness to govern on your side. Our proposal included tax cuts for income and for VAT, while making real reductions in the impact of fuel duty. That is important in communities outside of London, for instance, because of the important place driving has in communities without as much public transport. Just compare this to any of Labour's spendthrift plans, and you'll see that our Shadow Budget would've given more our economy bang for the taxpayers buck.

Well, while I believe the recession would've been severely muted had the government listened and changed course, we are now in the midst of a great economic downturn. I don't need to tell you that under this Labour government, people are hurting financially. But what we do about it is what matters - and that is why our Conservative Lifelong Learning Fund would empower each Briton with access to acquire new skills when times get tough and when technology changes your way of life. Education is a key priority for our side-by-side society mission - and our past shadow budget reflected the level of importance we place on our pupils - of all ages.

For our younger countrymen and -women, we need to be keenly aware of the world we leave them. Of course, I am speaking about climate change and the impact it will have if left unchecked. Like many of you, I believe we can and do much more than just set targets without having any accountability to reach them. That is why our plan puts government on your side, to help create a Northern Green Deal and focus on micro-generation in houses and communities across the United Kingdom. Simply going before Parliament and saying "we want to cut emissions" isn't enough, despite what the Government thinks! We need action, and only the Conservative Party is prepared to lead on this - with the help of future MPs like Edward Timpson.

Finally, I want to speak about the Lisbon Treaty and the importance of giving British people voice in the process. I wholeheartedly support ensuring that we get a referendum every time we cede more sovereignty to the European Union. I am glad to see the Government caving to our calls - really, calls from people in communities like those of Crewe and Nantwich - and giving us the right to reject Lisbon. Us Tories support the principle of subsidiarity: of allowing the smallest unit of government to do the jobs it can handle best, and then working up from there. While there is certainly a role for free trade in Europe, that doesn't mean we need an ever-growing political union full of Eurocrats to enforce it!

Well, my fellow Britons, is has been a great and distinct privilege to speak with you all today. I hope that, on by-election day, you join us in voting Conservative, for Edward Timpson, out of recognition that we have the plans and ideas to make government work for you, for a state that is on your side. Thank you!

Elaine Ashbury went canvassing in Crewe and Nantwich with local candidate Edward Timpson:
  • Europe: "Thanks to a consistent Conservative campaign to give you a say on the Lisbon Treaty, you'll finally get to cast your vote on the monumental transfer of sovereignty that is the Lisbon Treaty. We believe it shouldn't end with the Lisbon Treaty - we'll legislate so that every subsequent transfer of sovereignty to Brussels will need to be approved in a referendum by the British people. And we'll make efforts to bring powers that aren't used efficiently in Brussels back home to Britain. That's our promise to you - that this referendum be a start of a new assertive role for Britain in Europe."
  • Local services: "Local services like the post office are vital to the life of local communities up and down this country and right here in Crewe and Nantwich. We'll legislate to allow local communities to save vital services such as the pub or the post office more easily by easing regulation on such initiatives, because we realise how important they are to you."
  • Economy: "With the recession now being upon us, the contrast between the government's approach and our approach to the economy will become even starker. The government is choosing to go it alone with massive spending projects. Meanwhile, we've presented a strong side-by-side agenda, cutting taxes in our Shadow Budget, leading the way on re-mutualising Northern Rock and proposing creating Green Enterprise Zones in the North."
