Mr Speaker, I would like to thank the Right Honourable Lady for an advanced copy of her statement. fiddles with a blank sheet of paper

It is absolutely right that we extend the definition of hate crimes to cover the immutable characteristics that encompass disabilities. The disabled community cannot be left to fend for itself in the face of individuals or institutions that would seek to discriminate against them, that is the definition of an area where the Government should step in to protect the people. I can only say that I urge the Secretary of State to act quickly on this matter once this bill passes the House. I commend the Right Honourable Lady for her work in this area and welcome the cross-party cooperation and consensus on this bill.
