MERTON AND WANDSWORTH - Ashton Edwards
Canvass

Ashton Edwards will make sure to ask the local Labour candidates for the London Assembly to go out and canvass in Merton and Wandsworth, speaking about various plans for education, equality promotion, and diversity protection under a future Mayor of London John McDonnell. He’ll have a leaflet prepared to hand out with the points of the day. This day’s theme is focused on inclusivity.

Building on Diversity: “London’s diversity is one of its greatest assets. The cultural and religious festivals that this city hosts adds to the colour of London and boosts its attractiveness to new communities as well as investments from global businesses, and we absolutely need a mayor and Assembly that is going to push hard to protect and build on diversity of all types. As Mayor, John McDonnell is the right leader who can make London’s diversity an even stronger asset and use it to bring all of London together- rather than join in on the so-called ‘culture war’ that Tories seem to think is what people want. He’ll use his offices to make sure that there’s trust in London’s institutions, including building on the recommendations to how the MPS should act in the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry report. He’ll use his powers as Mayor to tackle gender and ethnicity pay gaps in the public and private sector, and build a London where employment better represents the diversity of those living in the city. He’ll strengthen programmes that fight against hate- tackling issues like Islamophobia, homophobia, transphobia, and anti-Semitism. And he’ll build on this Government’s efforts to expand access to the disabled. John McDonnell knows that diversity is strength, not a weakness- and he’ll be the mayor to preserve and build on this diversity.”

Helping Adults through Education: “With adult education funding devolved to London and other localities, there’s a real opportunity in making sure that we’re doing everything we can to help adults succeed. There’s opportunities in job training or even interview skills and resume-building assistance to bridging the digital divide and helping adults understand how to use all the great IT tools that younger folks take for granted. And by expanding English language courses for adults, we can bring more adults into our city’s economy. This work helps adults with the skills they need to get by and to thrive in our modern environment, and is a great weapon for tackling poverty; that’s why John McDonnell is going to use this new power to make a difference in adult education- programmes which have been cut and cut again by Tory austerity over the past ten years. And he’ll help bring these adults which are often ignored into our city’s economy and culture, giving them a place to thrive. We have the power- and it’s John McDonnell who will use it as mayor to help everyone.”

Boosting Support for All: “Inclusivity in London requires effort on the economic side too- perhaps just as much as anything else. As London gets more and more expensive, as the city defines success on the growth of business rather than the health and prosperity of its people, we need a mayor like John McDonnell who won’t ever forget that London’s true strength is the people that live and work here. His housing programmes and policies to promote affordable housing and protect renters are just a first step. He’ll expand programmes to let councils buy back former social housing to make it available to new families or those in need. He’ll boost support to organisations that help families access and apply for benefits that they deserve, and he’ll boost assistance for legal aid to provide important legal assistance to those who have seen the aid taken away thanks to Tory cuts. He’ll fight to tackle health inequality by promoting the NHS throughout London- all designed to make sure those who haven’t felt lifted up have a fair chance.”

The following leaflet is handed out, focused on the themes of the day. There is a picture (and captions identifying names) for John McDonnell, other Labour candidates for the London Assembly, and pictures of them at various cultural festivals like Pride, etc.

Building on Diversity
  • As Mayor, John McDonnell will avoid the Tories’ “culture war” mentality while embracing diversity and helping everyone succeed- regardless of race, sex, sexual orientation or gender identity, religion, and ability status.
  • As Mayor, John McDonnell will build trust in city institutions by tackling racist or biased practices by government organisations and ensure all services are accessible to the disabled.
  • As Mayor, John McDonnell will fight to tackle gender and ethnicity pay gaps by London employers.
Helping Adults through Education
  • As Mayor, John McDonnell will use London’s new powers on adult education to help expand access to job-related skills training: from basic skills to interviewing and resume-writing to help those left behind get jobs they deserve.
  • As Mayor, John McDonnell will use education to tackle the “digital divide” and help adults learn to use the innovative IT systems that we rely on for day-to-day life.
  • As Mayor, John McDonnell will expand English-language learning programs to boost the ability for all adults to integrate into City life.
Boosting Support for All
  • As Mayor, John McDonnell will focus on programs to expand affordable housing- REAL affordable housing for working-class families.
  • As Mayor, John McDonnell will expand programs to assist residents in taking advantage of all the benefits they’re due.
  • As Mayor, John McDonnell will fight for NHS funds to expand access to care and tackle health inequality leading to longer, healthier lives for everyone.

Prime Minister and Conservative Party Leader, Grant Kingston, walks on stage accompanied by Conservative London Mayoral candidate, Justine Greening, to speak with the crowd gathered.

Thank you all for joining us here today! It is a great pleasure to speak, and meet with you all today. I am honoured to be joined by the Conservative candidate for the London Mayoral Election, Justine Greening, who I wholeheartedly endorse as the best candidate in the upcoming election. In her fifteen years as an MP, Justine has worked tirelessly to help her constituents in Putney, as well as her work as a Shadow London Minister, in the Treasury, the Department for Transport, the Department for International Trade, as Women and Equalities Minister, and the Department for Education. Her track record speaks for itself, and I am proud to stand with her in support today, and implore you all to do the same on this upcoming Election Day.

So what will Justine do for you? Well let’s start by looking at public services, where Justine has promised to provide world class public services for everyone throughout London. She will provide better funding and improvement in schools and healthcare throughout the city, as well as building 200,000 new houses to tackle the current housing shortage. Justine has promised to make London the best city in the world to live in once again, and I believe she is the person to do it!

One of my main messages as the new Prime Minister is unity, and this message is supported in Justine’s pledge to community and inclusivity. I cannot support this message enough. London has always been a melting pot of cultures, and people from all backgrounds, united under one common trait, being Londoners. The Conservative Party has long backed the traditions of togetherness and community, and Justine is no different. Remember the spirit of community when London hosted the 2012 Olympics, let’s get back to that. Let’s get back to working together for a better London, and with Justine as Mayor, she will promote that philosophy with utmost importance. Justine has promised to make London a diverse and inclusive city to live in, and as our nation's great capital, I believe she can make London a reflection of our nation and what makes it great - community, diversity, and inclusivity.

In relation to this, Justine has promised to increase spending in policing in London, and is dedicated to challenging rising crime, with crime prevention programmes, and neighbourhood watch schemes. As part of the community spirit, Justine will ensure Londoners are safe in their city.

With support from the British Government, Justine has promised to improve the infrastructure of London, providing better city infrastructure, as well as better links to the rest of the UK. On top of this, Justine is dedicated to keeping the city transport running at 365 days, 24 hours a day, and 7 days a week - as well as keeping you all connected during this time with 4G/5G connections on all tube platforms.

In contrast, what will Labour and John McDonnell offer London? I can tell you it will be more of the same that you have seen under Sadiq Khan for the past four years. It will be more blaming the Government and not taking action, while the city fails in health, in education, in addressing the housing crisis, in policing and addressing growing crime, in transport. Is this the London you want to live in? A London that's services fall flat? Where you are not safe? Where you can’t get a place to fall home? Labour has used London as a political opportunity to attack the British Government, instead of helping it become a better place to live. John McDonell will only continue this, his own track record speaks for itself, and speaks poorly. I say that London deserves better, you deserve better!

This Election Day I ask all of you to support Justine Greening as the next London Mayor. Under her leadership you will have a Mayor who takes action, improves health, education and policing services, addresses the ongoing housing crisis, rising crime, and transport throughout the city. As well as that I have total faith that Justine can reignite the flame of the old London, and the old London community spirit, and create a community of diversity, inclusivity, and a shining example to the world of what a city should be!

This Election Day, vote Justine Greening!

Michael Smythe, MP for Chelsea and Fulham and the Chancellor of the Exchequer, was in Merton and Wandsworth today to deliver a public speech on behalf of Justine Greening and the local Conservative Candidates for the London Council. His speech focused on Justine’s promise for more housing to be built in London.

Ladies and gentlemen, it is my pleasure both to be back home and to address you tonight. Our Conservative Party candidates across London and, especially, Justine have been hard at work, I assure you, preparing to fight and win this election and I was only too honoured to have been asked to come and lend my support to them tonight.

One of the key elements of Justine’s platform has been to put an end to the housing crisis in London through investments in building new homes in every region. As you know, the constituency of Merton and Wandsworth is in a unique position in London; your high quality schools, proximity to the heart of London, and vast green spaces make Merton and Wandsworth an extraordinarily attractive place to move. However, there is a shortage of homes and the London Council is losing out on valuable opportunities to garner additional annual income which can then be devoted to the many important social services that make this part of London so great.

Justine’s plan to see 200,000 new homes built in London is crucial and, with the assistance of the national government, it is entirely realistic. And what’s more, unlike the Labour Party’s hard-left candidate, we will ensure that a proportionate amount of those homes are in high-desirability areas like this one. By contrast, John McDonnell will only build low-income council houses; he’ll build them cheaply, and he’ll rent them cheaply, and he will do it right here in your backyards. That means lower property values over time; it means occupying high-value real estate with low-revenue properties; it means creating the largest wealth gaps in the same neighbourhoods. We do not wish to see Marxist social engineering in our neighbourhoods; we do not wish to see the land which is in high demand being taken up by the state to be turned into council estates; and we do not wish to see your property, your net worth, devalued. Only the Conservatives will protect your investments by investing in projects that raise the value of your home, not lower it.

By creating the conditions necessary for a growing, thriving real estate market in London, Justine Greening will not only lead the way to supplying a great demand, but will be a part of a national effort to curb growing housing prices. It’s simple economics, really: right now, the supply of houses in certain sectors of the market is low and the demand is high. That means prices rise. Justine and her team of councillors and candidates have, rightly, understood that a significant portion of the market demand for houses isn’t in low-value homes or council estates, but in upper-market houses. That’s why her plan, to build a variety of homes in a variety of locations across London, is the most sensible one and will have the most positive impact on the housing market not only in London, but across the UK.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I don’t wish to keep you much longer. We do have some of the local candidates here and Ms. Greening herself and they have told me that they would be extremely happy to speak to you individually tonight. I would like to conclude by saying this: when it comes to infrastructure planning and spending, it is far better that the plan have long-reaching positive outcomes. Our plan, to facilitate the building of 200,000 homes of different values, with different target markets in mind, and in different regions, is a long-term strategy. It will help fight the quickly-rising price of buying a home and becoming self-sustainable; it will not put low-value homes in the backyards of high-value ones; and it will, most of all, maintain the diversity that is so cherished among the various boroughs of London. Our plan, her plan, is one which I believe will usher in a new and vibrant era in London’s real-estate market and, if I may be so bold, in its overall culture as well. It is, therefore, no surprise that I commend the plan, and the candidates who stand behind it, to you all.

Thank you.
