SOUTH WEST - Ashton Edwards
Speech

Ashton Edwards, MP for Kensington, visited the South West constituency with Labour’s candidates for the London Assembly. He toured the area and talked about transportation issues and the unique ability of Labour candidate John McDonnell to fully adopt some of the changes Labour has already been making- where the Tories promise with billboards, Labour will make happen through actual action.

“When you hear about someone wanting to come and give a speech about transportation, I don’t think there’s anyone who thinks that’s going to be the sexiest issue. The trains, taxis, busses, roadways, all sort of fade into the background when you think of London’s status as a financial and cultural powerhouse, but it’s this backbone of transit that allows London to work as a city at all. This infrastructure brings workers, visitors, and business opportunities in and out of the city and to surrounding communities like those here in the South West area. Without it, there’d be no London as we know it; so it’s absolutely important- if not sexy- to make sure that we have a Mayor and a London Assembly that is taking seriously their responsibility to constantly make sure that transport is working for London.

“I know that the Tory campaign has invested heavily in billboards to this effect as well- here we’ve seen pledges to make Tube service available 24/7, in other areas there have been pledges to provide data service on all the train lines. And it’s a fantastic idea to be sure; when you look at overnight Tub service, for instance, the numbers are there: people want it, people will use it, and it’s a great asset for service workers who need to move about, for people who work late, and even for revelers who want to make sure they can enjoy the London nightlife and still get home. That’s why it was Labour that pioneered the Night Tube in the first place- with the Picadilly Line in particular serving this region for 24 hours a day on the weekends. And it’s Labour that will deliver on expanding nighttime service on the Tube, building on the service that’s been available for years here in the South West area.

“The same is true on data service; thanks in large part to Labour’s investments, 97% of stations in the Underground network have Wi-Fi service. And thanks to Labour’s investments, you’re already seeing 4G data service being rolled out throughout the tunnels in the network- service that will be easily upgraded to 5G to help keep Londoners connected. While the Tories promise, Labour’s already been at work eliminating London’s largest “not-spot” to keep people connected with high-speed data. This is the kind of work that will be continued under John McDonnell- a long-time Londoner who has made transport accessibility and ease of use a key part of his campaign for Mayor. And I know that’s the interest of [LOCAL ASSEMBLY CANDIDATE] as well- to make sure that the resources and political will are there to truly make the Underground the envy of mass-transit systems world-wide.

“But Labour’s leadership goes beyond just investments; it includes smart management. Labour has kept fares frozen- saving you money- while being more efficient with how money is spent in TfL. When the Tories last ran TfL, they left it in a precarious position- a £1.5 billion annual deficit and no plan to get this to zero. Labour’s already cut this by more than 70% while maintaining services- even expanding them in the case of the Night Tube- and I know that the priority of John McDonnell will be to eliminate that so that there’s more funding to invest in expanding services- particularly here in the South West. He’ll also be there to make sure the Elizabeth Line project is finished and opened- allowing travelers to more easily and more quickly connect from here throughout the rest of London.

Labour leadership in London has seen a lot of growth in transport availability and affordability over the last five years; that’s why I say that the Tories can promise, but John McDonnell will deliver. He understands what it means to have a functioning transport infrastructure that is reliable, that is trustworthy, and that is affordable, because that’s how you ensure you can have a city that continues to thrive and that continues to serve everyone.

“I’m proud to support the kinds of investments that John McDonnell will make as Mayor. It’s not super sexy, I know, and it’s not the splashiest issue around- despite the billboards from the Tories. It’s the kind that will get real results for workers, for travelers, for everyone who relies on transit in London.

“It’s the kind of promise that you know you can trust to actually come true. So if you want to really see greater transport accessibility, and if you want to keep fares low and affordable, there’s only one choice in this election for Mayor, and that’s John McDonnell. There’s only one choice for the Assembly, and that’s [LOCAL ASSEMBLY CANDIDATE]. We’ll be the ones to deliver on those promises!”
