LOTHIAN - Katherine Sangster (NPC)
Speech

Katherine Sangster, MSP candidate for Edinburgh Eastern, was in Lothian to speak about Scottish Labour’s plans to promote economic growth and jobs development in Scotland- and how it was time Scotland had a change from years of distracting leadership. She was there with other Scottish Labour candidates, spending time meeting voters to talk about the programme in more detail.

“As someone who has worked in a number of positions supporting families in our communities to critically examining government policies that ought to uplift people, I know that jobs and economic resilience are always the number one issues in people’s mind. So much time and space is being given to talk about the problems with SNP’s leadership in Holyrood, but at the end of the day that takes a backseat to worrying about whether a job is secure or pays enough to take care of yourself and your family if you have one.

“That’s why Scottish Labour is placing a focus in this campaign not just on the problems of the SNP- the sleaze, the splits, and the graft- but rather how we could do better on building up our economy, supporting our businesses, and getting people, particularly young people, into lasting careers. With bold promises undelivered on by the SNP and with poverty on the rise, it’s time for a new leadership in Holyrood that can get to basics, that can roll up its sleeves and get to work on behalf of the Scottish people.

“Our economic plan will start with young people. When those who are just entering the workforce are denied opportunities thanks to a failure of policy, it creates a generation that will always be behind. It doesn’t just impact young people for years, but it’s lives that are scarred by a lack of meaningful growth and development. It means fewer families. It means more risks. A Scottish Labour leadership in Holyrood will focus instead on building up opportunities, in rescuing a potentially scarred generation, through boosting apprenticeship programs. We’ll add thousands of new apprenticeship places, and we’ll expand programs that pay businesses to hire young people- particularly those who are receiving allowances- to upskill them and to give them permanent, lasting jobs. We’ll develop a jobs access programme that will give work to those under the age of 25, those who are disabled, and those who are long-term unemployed, either jobs directly in the public sector to build stronger communities or through voluntary and private sector organisations that are willing to join us in our efforts to boost opportunity.

“But having just any job isn’t necessarily the key to instant success. Scottish Labour knows, and I know from my work with families young and old alike, that moving up, earning higher wages and getting into other career fields, is the way to build up to a high standard of living for everyone. Everyone who has that drive to grow, to develop, and to succeed should be encouraged rather than hindered. It’s why Scottish Labour will create a Skills Benefit, providing a direct payment to those- employed or not- that engage in job training programmes to learn new skills or build on their existing ones. We’ll tackle cost-related and other barriers to training, making programs available through investments in education services, so that everyone who wants access to job training can have it. And we’ll work with businesses to make sure that those higher-skilled and higher-paying jobs are available to everyone.

“Each of these programs can help open the door to new opportunities regardless of age and skill level. Scottish Labour is looking beyond just opening doors to new job opportunities; we want a dynamic Scotland that is always creating those new opportunities as well. We’ll expand the Scottish National Investment Bank so it can provide seed funding for new ideas, offer investment for all types of new projects and support businesses to transition towards greener and more digital futures. We’ll establish a programme to hold regular public and open roundtables on Scottish industrial policy to ensure that government action on developing the industries of the future is informed by trade unions and business stakeholders- so that we can find solutions that will work for everyone in creating new jobs and making those jobs sustainable in the long term.

“And our efforts will give more incentives to businesses to do more in this space as well, establishing a Good Work Plan recommendation to employers. Businesses will be recognised for their efforts to eliminate zero-hours contracts, their efforts to pay higher wages, their efforts to reach out to youth and disadvantaged populations in hiring. And those companies that meet the highest standards will receive the positive recognition they deserve, getting easier access to government contracts and government support. We won’t penalise those businesses that choose not to adopt these plans, but for those that want to come with us on a journey to revitalising our economy, we should be there to support them.

Scottlish Labour believes in the importance of working with businesses, trade unions, and workers to boost opportunities. We’ll bring partners together in a way that hasn’t been done before to put more people to work who want a job than ever before.

“The benefits of this of course are endless but well-known. More stable families, safer communities, happier and healthier people. There’s no reason we can’t have a comprehensive plan to employ everyone that wants a job and to help everyone find the life they want… unless that is we’re distracted by a push for independence or just making ourselves richer at the expense of others. It’s Scottish Labour that will put these plans into motion, and making sure that the benefits are shared by all.”

Ruth Davidson was accompanied by Lothians MSP Gordon Lindhurst as she canvassed in south and central Edinburgh, focusing on the marginal Central and Pentlands seats.

Securing our Streets: “Through their inaction against crime and preoccupation with a second referendum, the SNP have kept their eyes off the ball when it comes to crime. If we’re elected, our top priorities in tackling crime will be ending the soft-touch approach to crime and ensuring that sentences are tough and a real deterrent. We’ll stop the automatic early release of criminals so that parole is earned and not just given freely, end the presumption in our justice system that short sentences and community service are the best way to tackle crime, and allow judges to say that life means life for the worst offenders.”

Strengthening our Communities: “It has been the most vulnerable in Scottish society who have suffered from the incompetence and sleaze that has enveloped the SNP and fully distracted them from the work of government. A Conservative government will declare war on child poverty in Scotland, working towards full employment, funding the building of over 40,000 new homes for social renters, and boosting the Child Payment to £20 a week. We’ll create a national taskforce to help develop a support package for young carers, whilst relaxing rules around Carer’s Allowance to extend the payment for six months after a bereavement and ensuring that nobody loses their allowance for their income only just exceeding the threshold. Finally, we will end rough sleeping by the end of this Parliament, and create a Help to Rent scheme that provides a pathway into private renting for those who cannot currently afford to.”

Defending our Democracy: “Nicola Sturgeon has been forced to call this election because of the endemic sleaze and rot that has enveloped the Scottish Government after thirteen years of SNP rule. Such was the extent of this sleaze, Nicola Sturgeon herself has been found guilty of breaching the ministerial code: the most grievous offence any politician can be guilty of. The Scottish Conservatives want to clean up Holyrood, and if we are elected we will order an inquiry into this whole affair, which has cost you at least £500,000 and has led to too many women suffering. We will also give you the power to sack your MSP if they are found guilty of a crime, break the public’s trust or fail to show up to work for longer than six months. And, of course, we will defend Scottish democracy by opposing any attempt by the SNP and their puppets in the Greens to spit on the democratic will of the Scottish people and push through a second independence referendum.

Emblazoned clearly on each leaflet, next to photos of local constituency candidates and those on the regional list is:

Securing our Streets

- VICTIMS LAW: Allowing the voices of all victims to be heard, ending the Not Proven verdict and giving victims more legal power to challenge court decisions.
- LOCAL POLICING: Ensuring that communities are properly policed, investing in police infrastructure and reviewing Police Scotland’s capabilities as a whole.

Strengthening our Communities
- CHILD POVERTY: Working towards full employment, building 45,000 new social homes and increasing Child Payment to £20 a week
- UNPAID CARERS: Creating a national taskforce for young carers, and relaxing Carer’s Allowance rules.
- HOMELESSNESS: Ending rough sleeping by the end of this Parliament, and creating a Help to Rent scheme to help people gain a foothold in the private rented sector

Defending our Democracy
- SALMOND INQUIRY: Creating a judge-led inquiry into the Alex Salmond affair, focusing on the failures of the Scottish Government and lessons that can be learned for the future
