Extended biography: Penelope Catalina Sharp is a British-Spanish politician and former teacher who has been the Member of Parliament for Finchley and Golders Green since 2010, and was the Leader of Barnet Borough Council from 1998 to 2010. Born Penelope Pérez in 1962 in Golders Green to Margaret and Ruben Pérez, Sharp attended Finchley Catholic High School followed by King’s College London and the University of Winchester. When studying at the latter she met fellow Liberal Arts student Lachlan Sharp, to whom she would later be married.

After graduating with an MA in Liberal Arts, Sharp moved back to her hometown of Golders Green where she studied to become a teacher of History and Politics. She began teaching at her alma mater of Finchley Catholic High School in 1987, a post in which she remained until 1998 when she was elected Leader of Barnet Council. She was selected to run as the candidate for Finchley and Golders Green in 2005, but lost by 741 to Labour’s Rudi Vis. She remained the Leader of Barnet Council until 2010 when, following the retirement of Vis, she was elected as the Member of Parliament for Finchley and Golders Green.

Situated on the liberal left of the Conservative Party, Sharp has been strongly supportive of the Cameron-Osborne modernisation of the party, and has been extremely vocal on issues that many Conservative MPs may feel are taboo. She is openly critical of the War on Drugs, has spoken about her reservations on grammar schools, is fiercely pro-European, and has campaigned for the introduction of marriage equality since 2007.
