David James Richard Hadleigh was born on 31 December 1966 in Somerset to Sir Richard and Annalise Hadleigh (née Woodfine), as the couple’s third and youngest son. The Hadleigh family were wealthy and Sir Richard Hadleigh was the trustee of a baronetcy stretching back to the 15th Century. He was also an accomplished barrister, Queen’s Counsel and senior undersecretary in the Attorney General’s office.

David Hadleigh attended Stonyhurst College, a Roman Catholic public school in the Jesuit tradition, where he excelled in sports, art and Latin. Hadleigh produced a number of oil on canvas paintings during his time at Stonyhurst which were put on display in prominent locations at the school.

Hadleigh went on to attend the University of Oxford, graduating as a Master of Law with first class honours. He was called to the bar by Lincoln’s Inn and practised as a barrister specialising in criminal law for decades, eventually being appointed a Queen’s Counsel. In the early 1980s he was involved politically with the SDP, later joining the Liberal Democrats as a member. A close associate of and adviser to William Croft, Hadleigh became chief of staff to Mr Croft when he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister in the Manning ministry. Hadleigh subsequently stood for election to the House of Commons in December 2015, somewhat ironically defeating former Prime Minister Sir James Manning himself in Richmond Park.

Hadleigh is married with three children. He describes himself as “a very bad Catholic.”
