Biography: Andrew Summer is a British historian, academic and Labour Party politician, having served as the Member of Parliament from Exeter since 1997. Born to a middle class parents - both staunch Labour Party supporters - in Exeter, Summer developed a keen interest in history from an early age, choosing to pursue a career in academia with a particular focus on 15 and 16th century British history. As his professional career progressed, he developed a fascination with historical figures which he judged to be unfairly maligned and/or in need of re-examination, gaining a reputation as something of a revisionist historian. He also became increasingly frustrated by what he felt was the failure of academia to engage more effectively with the public, which he believed in turn made several - to him - fascinating subjects appear dull or inaccessible to most people. Having obtained his PhD by the early 90's, and strongly supportive of the efforts of institutions like the Richard III Society, Summer wrote a number of purposedly provocative and relatively controversial articles on subjects like the War of the Roses and the Tudor Dynasty, with his most high profile effort being Mary Tudor's Tragedy, a revisionist biography which sought to bolster Queen Mary I's reputation and promote her accomplishments. This, combined with his efforts to "make history more accessible to people", have made him into something of a public intellectual.

Having also developed an interest in politics since adolescence, as well as a deep seated belief in moderate, center-left, pro-Europe politics - which led him to volunteer for the Yes Campaign in the 1975 Referendum -, Summer privately struggled with his political allegiances during the early months of the Social Democratic Party, but ultimately remained a Labour supporter partly due to family ties and because of a belief that the SDP would not hesitate to get into bed with the Conservatives. Having grown increasingly frustrated at Labour's inability to modernize itself and the seemingly endless cycle of Conservative governance, Summer was strongly supportive of Tony Blair's leadership bid and modernization efforts, and subsequently became more and more involved in local and party politics, before ultimately deciding to stand for Parliament. Having been selected to contest the Conservative held seat of Exeter, Summer became an MP at age 42 in the 1997 landslide. He remained a loyal Blairite backbencher for the entirety of the 1997-2001 Parliament, partly due to the collapse of his marriage and a difficult divorce, but gained some brief notoriety with a 2000 speech strongly supporting entry into the Euro as well as criticizing a percieved disloyalty towards Blair from Brownite elements. Re-elected with a decreased majority in 2001, Summer finds himself at the start of the parliament disappointed with the short-term situation, and wondering about the future.

Wanted to confirm I'll still be unable to play for some time, much like during the past month. Nothing serious, but I continue to lack the time.

(So do feel free to remove me from the BBS)
