When Owen, err, Owain Jones is a Tory wet.

Owain Peter Jones born 1958 in Singapore to Peter Henry Jones b. 1920 and Erica Williams b 1922. His father was a British Army officer in Singapore Garrison and his mother a botanist and garden designer. After the British withdrawal from Singapore the Jones family moved back to the UK. His father was occasionally stationed overseas and Owain was sent to boarding school.

Owain after schooling went on a gap year and travelled abroad before going to Sandhurst. After a sort stint in the army in which he saw active service in Northern Ireland.

Owain joined the SDP sortly after their creation and but due to his army career was active member of the party until going to university.

After leaving the army went to Oxford and studied economics. Jones became chair of young social democrats while at university and became involved in many party campaigns. He ran for parliament in 1987 but was unsuccessful, along with Daniel Finklestein he was a close ally of David Owen

When the merger with the Liberal Party was proposed, Jones was among the leading opponents and refused to join the merged party. After Owen had announced his resignation from politics, Jones was the spokesman for a group of young SDP members who joined the Conservatives.

During the 1990s he was involved in Conservative party policy making and worked for centrist think tanks and the Tory reform group.

Between 1995 and 1997 Jones was Director of the Conservative Research Department and in that capacity advised Prime Minister John Major and attended meetings of the Cabinet when it sat in political session. Jones became among the earliest advocates of the 'modernisation' of the Conservative Party, laying out the principles of change in a series of speeches and columns in The Times.

Jones stood successfully for parliament in 1997 for Monmouth. Jones continued to advise the party leadership under William Hague and supported Will Croft for leader in 2001.

Jones describes himself as a Liberal Conservative.
