Calvin James Ward grew up to a middle class family in Glasgow. His father was a Church of Scotland minister and Calvin had intentions of doing the same even taking undergraduate courses in theology. However, he discovered he was called to social service instead of Word and Sacrament and so changed paths toward social work. Ward is still a very devout member of the Kirk, and is friendly with most of its ministers. While working as a social worker, Ward saw the need to do more. He started the Feed My Lambs nonprofit, which seeks to end hunger and rough sleeping in Glasgow. This service sent him to the Glasgow City Council for four years. In 1997, Ward ran for the Maryhill seat and won considerably

Ward has maintained a back bench status but is beginning to seek more opportunities as they present themselves
