Clarissa Luciana Ashbridge, commonly known as Clarice Ashbridge, is a Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party politician, serving as MP for Eastwood since 2001. She was born on the 4th February 1966 to millionaire James Ashbridge, founder of the multi million pound Ashbridge Group, and Laura Ashbridge (nee Cameron) at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley, Renfrewshire. The success of Ashbridge’s She spent the first few years of her life at the family property of Earshall Castle, near St Andrews in Fife, until the death of her father from a stroke in 1972. Following his death, the family sold the property and moved into Laura’s father’s farm in Aberdeenshire, where she stayed until moving to Edinburgh in 1978 to attend boarding school, as St George’s School for Girls. Graduating in 1984, she then attended the University of Glasgow to study politics and English literature, spending a year abroad studying in Hong Kong in 1987. During this time, she also wrote for the Glasgow Guardian, the university’s student newspapers, and was the secretary of the university’s Conservative Association.

Following her graduation, she quickly found employment, working for the Paisley Daily Express in a number of roles for two years, before becoming a political reporter for the Daily Record. In 1994, after four years at the Record, she made the move to radio, becoming a popular host on Radio Clyde, playing a key role as the station moved to being a more mainstream, top-40 station. She quit from that role in 1995 to run for a council seat in East Renfrewshire, which she won handily, whilst also taking up a weekly column in the Daily Record. In 1997, she became campaign manager for Paul Cullen, then Solicitor General for Scotland, in his unsuccessful campaign to become MP for Eastwood. With the Scottish Conservatives facing oblivion in 1997, losing all of their seats, Clarice decided to dedicate her work full time to helping rebuild the party. She became the party’s regional organiser in the West of Scotland, before taking on the position of chief of staff to the party’s new leader, David McLetchie, in 1998. She stood down as a councillor in 1999, instead becoming the party’s candidate in Glasgow Govan in the inaugural Scottish Parliament election, coming third behind Labour and the SNP. In 2000, she was selected as the Conservative’s prospective parliamentary candidate for Eastwood, which contains her council ward. Amid a poor night for Labour in Scotland, Clarice defeated one term Labour MP Jim Murphy on a swing of 5%, becoming only one of two Scottish Conservative MPs. In Parliament, she has sat on the Scottish Affairs Select Committee. She is identified as being on the left of the party, and unlike the majority of Scottish Tories is a vocal backer of the Scottish Parliament and devolution.

Ashbridge is the middle child of James and Laura Ashbridge’s three children. The eldest, James, is currently CEO of the Ashbridge Group and the youngest, Katherine, is an artist and print journalist. Ashbridge married 55 year old Sir Mike Ashbridge, her distant relation and a former lecturer and MSP for the West of Scotland Region, in 2000, and is therefore entitled to use the title of Lady Ashbridge, although she generally does not. Both she and her husband are avid hill climbers, and aims to be the second MP to complete the Munros after Chris Smith. She lives primarily in her constituency and in London, but owns two other properties, a holiday home in Northern Ireland, and a French farmhouse in the Ardeche. She has a keen interest in renovating properties, and has expressed a desire to purchase and renovate her childhood home of Earshall Castle. In the rest of her spare time, Ashbridge enjoys reading, fishing and collecting records.
