Re: General Press Comments
I am naturally disappointed that the Government have chosen to reject solutions in favour of another inquiry, we had the chance to secure meaningful reforms of the system and the Government have rejected it for... some reason. That being said I am somewhat pleased that the Government have decided to ditch the partisan posturing of late in favour of a genuinely cross-party inquiry led by a Conservative Party peer and in lieu of an immediate solution the Liberal Democrats will carefully consider his recommendations when they are laid before Parliament.

Re: General Press Comments
The Prime Minister has consistently attempted to convey the image that the Labour MPs in the Socialist Campaign Group hold no influence over her Government and indeed her leadership. Yet in one his first acts as Home Secretary, the self-avowed socialist has acted to renationalize a once private industry and force the British people to cover the £775 million bill. The Prime Minister's party was elected on a pledge to support private industry, and to leave their history as a movement that ardently supported nationalization in the past. Now, however, we see a Prime Minister who is increasingly beholden to members of the SCG and their stated aim of expanding the power of the state and swallowing up entirely successful private businesses.
New Labour makes no qualms with breaking their promises to the British people, and it's becoming obvious we have a Prime Minister who has no issue with appeasing the radical elements of her own party.

Re: General Press Comments
Today, I wrote in the Daily Mail about the pressing need for the strengthening of our child protection laws, following on from the "Sarah's Law" campaign launched by the incredibly brave and inspiring Sara and Michael Payne last year, following their daughter's murder.
In a few days time, I will be putting forward a motion in Parliament, calling for an urgent review into our child protection laws by a panel of experts, with the goal of creating legislation to make publicly available information about child sex offenders, allowing those who take care of children to know if people in their community or who in other ways have access to their children have previously committed offences against children.
This issue is much bigger and far, far more important than any political divide in the country. It is my sincerest hope that the government and other opposition parties will join with us in supporting this motion.

Re: General Press Comments
I absolutely look forward to the motion that the Shadow Home Secretary will present to Parliament. Protecting children from crime is an important goal and one I whole-heartedly support. I also agree with the Shadow Home Secretary that we should look at this issue seriously, with a careful eye towards creating the best laws that we can to increase safety of our children based on facts and careful analysis by experts.
I welcome the new Shadow Home Secretary's interest in protecting our children, and this is an area where we can see positive results by working together. We can do a lot of good to help protect children from predators by making sure we know where potential threats are and making sure that there is communication with those who ought to know these threats- all with the aim of keeping children safe. While I can't speak to how debate on a motion like this may go, I can say the Home Office is interested in engaging with as many people as are interested to make a strong, safe law our priority.

I have just come of the phone to the family members of Mrs Whitehouse, who is very sadly nearing the end of her life. We discussed how she has been, and will always be, an inspiring lady. She has certainly inspired me, and I have the family's blessing to carry on her work and legacy. I will make it one of my life's goals as an MP to carry on the work of Mrs Whitehouse. One of the first things I am to propose is to be strengthening of the watershed laws and a review of blasphemy laws with the intention of strengthening them.

The Conservative Party talk a good game when it comes to our villages and countryside but they repeatedly refuse to back it up with action. In their recent Shadow Budget they froze every budget regarding the countryside, our rivers, and anti-flooding measures. Meanwhile the Liberal Democrats invested over £70mn in our waterways, including brand new flood defences for our towns, £150mn for countryside and rural regeneration, and over £180mn for energy efficiency schemes to help old homes save money. Only one party is committed to standing up for our towns and villages, and it's not the Conservative Party.

If the House of Lords block Section 28 repeal and break the Salisbury Convention then I urge the Government to finally do the rest of the job and provide for more democratic representation in the House of Lords. We simply cannot have unelected, unaccountable, individuals blocking the will of the elected Commons and the manifestos of two of its largest three political parties

Re: General Press Comments
I was delighted today to be able to have the chance to speak to the Countryside Alliance about a particular passion of mine: rural safety and security. For too long, rural towns and villages have been disadvantaged in terms of police presence when compared to big towns and cities.
Under a Conservative government, that ends: with a massive programme of investment in police infrastructure, hiring of police and extra funding for training to be made available for rural police forces. By the end of term one of a Conservative government, every town and village in the nation will have a local police station staffed with a full cohort of officers, and every town and village in the nation will have an officer on the beat. Whilst Labour pour money into the inner cities, and the Lib Dems spend record amounts on hug a hoodie programmes to make our prisons soft, the Conservatives will invest your money in a rural revolution.

Re: General Press Comments
The Conservatives have already shown the UK their budget which blows our surplus and brings the UK back to an age of borrowing and ever increasing debt, and off the back of it have put forward a proposal that on liberal estimates would cost £40 billion – without costing a penny of it. This attitude from the Conservative Party is dangerous and completely unsustainable.

Re: General Press Comments
Our rural communities deserve better than a Conservative Party who makes knowingly undeliverable promises to secure their votes. Fresh from slashing our surplus, the Conservative Party has announced another borrowing binge that will hurt rural businesses and families economic security. Their rural policing policy would cost £40 billion - and likely substantially more - that will need to be paid off. The Leader of the Opposition cannot be trusted: he broke his promises in the Shadow Budget, and cannot deliver on his Shadow Home Secretary’s rural policing policy.
