Croft Speech After VONC Results

Post by Will Frost »

William Croft joins Conservative Party MPs at Smith Square to hear the results of the vote of no confidence. Joined by his wife and children, Mr. Croft smiles and supporters voice their approval when the results are announced. After the results of the confidence vote had been announced, William Croft heads to the podium where he begins speaking.

Good evening,

Allow me to begin by thanking the Chairman of the 1922 Committee and his staff for the professionalism with which they’ve handled this vote. I appreciate their hard work, and thank them for executing the process seamlessly.

While this is certainly not how I had hoped to begin my leadership, I am of course very happy with the result. I thank the 172 MPs who have voted in favor of retaining confidence in my leadership. Securing the votes of over 80% of our MPs has made it clear that the parliamentary party supports my continued leadership, and provides us with the certainty we as a party need to now move forward.

As the saying goes, a week can be a long time in politics. This week has felt like one of the longest. I would be lying to you if I didn’t admit that the events of the past 24 hours have been deeply frustrating for me. Not because of any impact they’ve caused me personally, but because of the damage they have done to our party. While New Labour continues to subject this country to job killing regulations and legislation that strips us of our personal freedoms, the Conservative Party should be standing ready to speak up for the interests of hard working British people across our country. Instead, we have allowed ourselves to become distracted by needless and purposeless infighting.

Tonight, my message is simple: this ends now. The fighting, the public spats, all of it ends tonight. We owe it not just to ourselves, but to the people we have been elected to represent, to clean up our act and to do so immediately. No more missteps, no more confusion, no more distractions. We have a job to do, we have a country to rescue, and we have millions of people who are counting on us. It’s time we remember them.

The task before us is clear: to unite our party, to present a positive message of change and optimism, and to prepare ourselves to provide the principled leadership this country deserves. Anything less would represent an unmitigated failure. I know we all have our differing views on policy, we are after all a big-tent party. There is, however, one thing we do share. The certainty that a Conservative Government rooted in the core principles of freedom, the rule of law, and aspiration can deliver so much more for the people of this country who have been let down by this Government. All I ask of each of you is that we keep that unifying fact at the center of all that we do from here on out.

Even on a night like tonight, I remain proud to be a Conservative. There is, after all, much to be proud of. We are the party of Disraeli, of Churchill, of Thatcher. We are the party that has been the consistent standard bearer of freedom and liberty in this country. We are the party that vanquished socialism from the shores of our island nation, and that restored Britain to a nation of opportunity and possibility. Once again we have reached a moment in history where the British people need our party to step up and to deliver the change they seek. To set aside our individual differences, and to come together in our shared commitment to fight for the future of our country. It is a big job, but we are more than capable of rising to the occasion. So, as I said once before, and will say again tonight: let’s get to work.

A resounding victory for a beleaguered leader. The Tories have rallied behind their man; but how long can Croft keep the lid closed on the awaiting storm? Here, he delivers a forceful message to his colleagues and underlings that this is the end of the infighting. That's good, but we will have to wait and see whether any of them hear him or care.

Again, a lot of platitudes which are not necessarily out of place in a speech like this. Probably, the speech wasn't necessary and Croft might be advised to get his head down and churn out some actual work in the very near future, but this speech doesn't hurt him any. It also doesn't help him. It just sort of is what it is. The Tories will be hoping to move on from this rather quickly.
