PC 11: Budget
Re: PC 11: Budget
After watching both the Lib Dems and the Torys bungle their budgets and break promises I think it’s abundantly clear that our slow and steady path of smart investment and controlling costs is the right way to go. We’re keeping our promises to the people. We’re investing in public sector and encouraging business growth. Well done to Sir Jack!

Re: PC 11: Budget
William Croft made an impassioned speech about his belief in a free economy and an open society, and reminded every person in this country why he’s the right man for our movement and the right man for this moment in Britain’s history. What the Chancellor calls "fiscal prudence," I and other members of the Conservative Party call being too fearful to actually set out a clear direction for the future of our economy. We have a strong budget surplus, we should use it to return more money to the British people and allow new wealth to generate that we can put back into public services. The Chancellor's plan is a short term solution for the next year, and that's putting it generously. We need a long term plan for a more dynamic economy, and I believe that William Croft and our Shadow Chancellor are uniquely capable of providing it.

Re: PC 11: Budget
I am afraid that the Home Secretary has been getting his figures a little confused. This Government's budget only invests an extra £150mn into rehabilitation compared to a Lib Dem budget which doubles rehabilitation funding. The Lib Dems recognise that £11bn is an awful lot of money for an economy to shell out for when it comes to reoffending which is why we built our Home Office reforms around justice for all, more presence for officers, and a pathway back to society for those who deserve it. I'm glad that Labour are part of the way there, I just wish they'd go the whole hog and commit just 1% of their surplus to match our rehabilitation spending pledge.

Re: PC 11: Budget
I'm proud of the budget that was proposed by the chancellor, including significant increases in research to renewable energy. The Labour party recognizes the problems of climate change and seeks to develop a response that will get our energy independence while addressing the issue. I believe that this Government will make sure that we are energy independent. The Conservative party has completely ignored this issue. It's becoming clearer by the day that the Tory party is the party of foreign oil. The Labour party is pursuing policies that make Britain stronger. Lives will be made better by Britain lowering the energy costs of all Brits.

Re: PC 11: Budget
When members of the Government refer to 'showing real fiscal responsibility' - what they really mean is that they are determined to prove to the money markets that Labour will not return to its 'tax, spend, fail' ways. This budget was an unmitigated failure, it lacked breadth and depth of meaning; it provided no meaningful tax cuts at all, and is more of the same old economic control freakery in the manner of the Chancellor's political mentor Gordon Brown. Sir Jack is clearly auditioning for the part of Ebeneezer Scrooge in the upcoming Labour Party take of A Christmas Carol. The much vaunted investments which were trailed by the press before the Chancellor announced the budget, are nothing more than throwing good money after bad on vanity projects such as the New Deal - which (if not for rigid Labour dogma) could be done more efficiently and prove to be cost-effective to the taxpayer. Likewise, on public services - Labour announces spending increases without the reform which has to accompany them so that the public can get the best out of the NHS and schools.
In short, it's a budget that was hyped to be a game-changer - the reality is that it's just more of the same.

Re: PC 11: Budget
In the Chancellor's budget report, it is very pleasing to see that interest rates are holding at a relatively stable level for another financial year. In the one area of the economy where New Labour has abdicated control to the independent experts of the Monetary Policy Committee - we see a success story, in strong contrast to the Chancellor's 'keeping up appearances' treasure chest budget that is being universally monikered a wasted opportunity to promote growth. This of course is quite telling, we know that Gordon Brown's vision of Bank of England independence was borne out of New Labour's burning desire to make its credentials to The City known, after the experience of the last Labour Government, who could've blamed them for being sceptical that New Labour wouldn't return to tax and spend?
Brown's vision of Bank of England was ultimately one of quasi-independence, with appointments tightly controlled by him; that's why Eddie George resigned as Governor in 1997. Sir Jack shows no sign of deviating from his political mentor's course; I have repeatedly questioned him in the House of Commons on the need for increasing the independence of the Monetary Policy Committee and he has brushed aside a cross-party Early Day Motion calling upon him to do that. The Conservatives can see that granting operational independence to the Bank of England has been a success, we'll finish the job.

Re: PC 11: Budget
If the Conservatives want to talk about how un-excited they are about this Government's budget, that's fine by me. Rather than a budget that gives out benefits to the top of the social ladder, we're making targeted tax cuts and benefit increases designed to help workers and families. Rather than spend almost the entirety of the deficit on projects that have no substance but are designed to sound good- that is, the Conservative's wanting to just pay businesses money as part of some new programme they promise to develop in the future- we're investing in transportation, in energy, and in the NHS.
Rather than go back to the boom and bust days of Tory leadership that brought us three recessions in less than twenty years, this Government's prudent spending will keep Britain's economy humming and put benefits where they're needed most. We're investing in cutting NHS wait times. We're supporting families with more access to childcare. And we're helping out those that need it most with our benefit increases. That's real leadership. I'm sorry that it doesn't excite the Tories, but given where we've been when they were in charge, I'm also very glad it doesn't.

Re: PC 11: Budget
Under the Government’s budget, families and children will be better off. Not only will acting in a fiscally responsible way mean we reduce the bill paid for by future generations, it frees up funding for investment to help them. We are tackling child poverty by introducing a new child tax credit and in rising working tax credits so that disadvantaged families are up to £1,200 a year better off. We are supporting family incomes by increasing maternity pay by £1,000 a year and child benefit by over £50 a year. We are also increasing our funding for Sure Start and childcare to help parents and give every child the best possible start in life. Other parties talk about helping families to give their ideological “crusade” cover to be fiscally irresponsible, but Labour will actually help them and their children by tackling poverty, supporting incomes, and fund the public services that help them the most.

Re: PC 11: Budget
This Government's obsession with a surplus for the sake of a surplus is hurting families and creating a nation of dependency in its wake. This Government's tax policy, barely a cut if we're being honest compared to those on offer in other parties, is taking money from the poor to give back to the poor through our benefits system and reap the political benefits of that game of pass the parcel. Rather than giving people £1,000 of their own money back the Liberal Democrats have decided it's better if we simply don't take that thousand pounds which is why we have instituted tax cuts worth £1,000 to a family with two earners on the minimum wage, it's why we cut VAT worth over £100 to a pensioner claiming both State and State Second Pension, and it's why we froze your Council Tax in real terms whilst investing in local government for bespoke local solutions to local problems. Labour's micromanaging attitude sounds good when you hear it but if you dig a little deeper you find, invariably, they're just moving money back and forth.

Re: PC 11: Budget
Through prudent finances and responsible investment the Chancellor has delivered a budget that works for Britain. This Government is committed to delivering strong public services, fairer taxes and fiscal responsibility and with Labour's sound management of public finances the country is reaping the rewards of the last four years. When Labour came into power we inherited an economy that had been shocked to its core after 18 years of Conservative boom and bust economics - and only Labour has been able to turn the corner away from that failed economic model that only benefited the very wealthy in our society. With wages up, the economy growing and unemployment falling Britain is going from strength to strength that now enables the Government to invest responsibly and provide long-term security for our public services.
