Sir Arthur Severin Stanley

Born February 3, 1962 (Age 57) in Cambridgeshire to Michael Charles Stanley and Aileen Fortune Constance Hugh Smith. His paternal grandparents are the children of the 17th Earl of Derby and the 7th Marquess of Londonderry respectively. His great grandfather was the 7th Duke of Manchester. He is a member of the illustrious Conservative family, the Stanley family, who hold the Earldom of Derby (his first cousin twice removed) and he is related to the Montagu family, who hold the Dukedom of Manchester (third cousin). His aunt, Kathryn Stanley DCVO, was Lady-in-Waiting to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II from 1955 to 2002.

Educated at Eton like his father and grandfather, he excelled in languages. He proceeded to Oxford where he read to a double first in Classics in 1984. He took a position at Altrincham Grammar School for Boys where he taught Latin. It was in his first year that Fred Talbot was dismissed following an indecent proposal he made to two boys in his home. This incident has stuck with him and largely informed his passion for the protection of children.

He taught at Altrincham Boys' School until 1992 when Sir Fergus Montgomery retired from public life. A member of the Stanley family, which has a long line of high level service in the Conservative Party, and a resident of the constituency, Arthur was put forward as Sir Fergus' replacement. He won the election easily and has served as the MP for the area ever since. At the time of his election, Arthur was the youngest Conservative MP.

He served as PPS to then-Education Secretary, John Patten, from 1992-1994; then as the Constitutional Affairs Spokesman from 1997-2000. He was made Shadow Secretary of State for Education and Employment by William Hague in 2000 and stayed in that position until 2001. He was made Shadow Leader of the House of Commons and Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster by Iain Duncan Smith, serving the entire Parliament in that role. Under Michael Howard, Stanley served as Chairman of the Conservative Party together with Maurice Saatchi from 2003 until 2005. Under David Cameron, he was made Shadow Minister of State for Europe, but resigned the post in 2007 in protest of the Government's opposition to Grammar schools.

He was named Backbencher of the Year in 2010 by Spectator. He served as Chairman of the 1922 Committee from 2013-2015. He was offered, in 2016, the role of Secretary of State for Work and Pensions but refused the position. A noted Eurosceptic, Stanley was not offered a position in the First May Cabinet. However, in December of 2018 he was made Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs after Boris Johnson resigned the position. He has been serving in that role since.

He was appointed a Knight Bachelor for political and public services in the 2015 New Year honours list and was invested by the Prince of Wales at Buckingham Palace.

He campaigned to leave the European Union, but opposed the possibility of a no-deal Brexit. He voted in favour of all of the deals.

Sir Arthur is married to Patricia (m. 1985) and has two children, Celine (b. 1988) and Abigail (b. 1990).
