Political Career: Following the end of her military career in 2003, in the midst of the Iraq War, Major General Harrington entered politics. Harrington, who has always taken an internationalist stance, was first elected to Southampton City Council in 2004, and then Parliament in 2005. Given her relative fame, her rise through the party was meteoric, and she was Shadow Secretary of State for Defence during the tenure of Ed Miliband before being relegated to the backbenches under Jeremy Corbyn.

Biography: Hilda Helena Harrington, born Hilda Helena Rowe in 1952, is the only daughter of Rod and Roberta Rowe. Her childhood was, for the most part, unremarkable. She attended her local primary school in Southampton, and then the local grammar. She was in the top 5% nationwide for the 11+, earning her a spot. She graduated at 18 and was awarded a place and a scholarship at the University of Bristol where she read War Studies. Following this, she entered the Royal Army as an officer cadet in 1970 and, by 1979, had been promoted to Major.

During the 1980s, as the Falklands War raged, Major Rowe was dispatched to the island. Upon her return and the end of the war, she was promoted further to Lieutenant Colonel. By the end of the 1980s, after her marriage to Lieutenant General Harold Harrington, she became a Brigadier. She remained in this role until 1997 when she was once again promoted to Major General, a role that she held until she left the British Army in 2003. She was the first, and remains the only, woman to ever hold this rank.

After leaving the armed forces, Major General Harrington entered politics. She had always been vocal and became even more so after becoming a private citizen. She lobbied in favour of allowing LGBT people into the armed forces and has covertly spoken against the Iraq War. Despite this, she has been eyed with some suspicion on the left of the party, notably being sacked from the frontbench in 2015 by incoming leader Jeremy Corbyn. Since leaving the frontbench she has continued to lobby for causes close to her heart, and remains a powerful voice in Parliament.
