Andrew Summer was born in Dover (Kent) in 1965 to a strongly Conservative, middle class family. Having developed a keen interest in history since childhood, Summer's parents tried to encourage him to choose a more lucrative career, something which he bitterly resisted. His stubborness eventually allowed him to pursue a much desired career as an academic, focusing on the Victorian Era. Summer obtained a BA in History at the University of Kent during the early 1990's, and a DPhil at Oxford at the turn of the millenium, followed by the publication of two moderatedly successful books on 19th Century British politics and parties. Having initially stayed away from politics after a brief involvement as a university student in the 1980's, and disappointed by the Major years, Summer would later take on a more active role supporting the Conservative Party, particularly due to his marked distaste for Tony Blair's style and policies.

Chosen to contest the safe seat of Ashford in the 2010 General Election, he held it with an increased majority, being re-elected as an MP in 2015 and 2017. As a life long - if somewhat pragmatic - Eurosceptic, Summer supported and campaigned for Leave at the 2016 Referendum. Broadly supportive of Theresa May's leadership pitch, Summer has remained a somewhat loyal bachbencher, supporting the Prime Minister's deal in all three instances out of a combination of pragmatism/loyalty, and being strongly against efforts by other members of Parliament to seize control over the Brexit process.
