Personal History:
Kelly Wheeler was the fourth child of eight to Irish immigrants in Everton, Liverpool. His father was a bricklayer and his mother was a waitress. The Wheelers had always been involved in leftist politics. Kelly remembers marching with a banner that said “Better to break the law than break the poor” when he was in middle school. Growing up, Kelly was fascinated by his Catholic faith, and at one point, considered becoming a priest. When he was thirteen, his priest taught him how to pick the lock on the church door so that he could get in to practice the organ. Kelly thought himself how to play. Kelly’s life changed direction shortly after his seventeenth birthday, when his girlfriend, Sara, told him she was pregnant. The two hadn’t been dating for long, but they decided to raise their child together. Kelly started an apprenticeship instead of studying theology like he originally planned. He became a carpenter and Sara made extra money babysitting. Shortly after her eighteenth birthday, the Wheelers officially got married at a small ceremony. They remain happily married and have had several more children and grandchildren.

Early in his career, Kelly joined Unite the Union and got personally involved in politics. He recruited candidates to run for local offices and eventually was elected to City Council in his own right. By then, though, Labour had taken much less radical positions than in the good old days of his childhood. In 2010, when Peter Kilfoyle stood down, Kelly won a contentious nomination against Steve Rotheram, earning 59 of 113 votes. As the Labour candidate, Kelly coasted into parliament and hasn’t had a difficult election to date. Kelly has spent most of his career in parliament as a low-key backbencher and supporter of people like Jeremy Corbyn and Dawn Butler.

Kelly lives in Orrell Park with his wife and three youngest children. He’s got lots of tattoos but nothing that a suit doesn’t cover. He plays the organ at the Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church. Kelly supports Liverpool FC. He is an extraordinarily bad cook.
