Banking and Financial Dealings Act 2020

Issue: Remembrance Day has been a long standing day of memorial since the First World War to remember members of our armed forces, who have died in the line of duty. The date it is held on, the 11th November, and was chosen as an armistice was struck in the “11th hour, of the 11th day, in the 11th month” of 1918. This day should be observed as a day of remembrance officially through becoming a bank holiday in the United Kingdom, bringing the nation to a rest to remember those who bravely fought for our freedoms.

Intervention and Implementation: Remembrance Day, the 11th November, shall become a bank holiday throughout the United Kingdom. The Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971, Schedule 1 Bank Holidays, Section 1, Section 2, and Section 3 shall be amended to include:

“11th November
12th November in a year in which the 11th November is a Sunday”

Mr. Speaker,

It is a great honour to introduce this legislation to the House today, that will see Remembrance Day become an official bank holiday in the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom has long observed Remembrance Day as a day of memorial for those members of our armed forces who gave their lives to protect the freedoms of our great country. This year will be the 103rd anniversary of the end of the First World War, when the armistice was struck in the 11th hour, of the 11th day, in the 11th month. I believe that it is long overdue that we make this a true day of remembrance, and officially make it a bank holiday to allow people to take time out of their normal lives, to give time to properly and respectfully remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their families, friends, and the United Kingdom.

Mr. Speaker, I won’t ramble on. Throughout history millions have given their lives for our nation, and what we believe in, I feel it would be nothing short of a disservice to not see this bill pass through Parliament swiftly. It is time to remember their ultimate sacrifice properly.

I commend this bill to the House.
