HOME SECRETARY IN WORKINGTON TO TOUT POLICE RECRUITMENT

WESTMINSTER -- Today the Home Secretary travelled to Cumbria where he visited with the local police force in Workington and delivered a speech highlighting his recent announcement of the Government's plans to recruit 25,000 new police officers.

"The central vision of the Government is clear: we want to give every British person an equal shot at success and a fantastic life," the Home Secretary began, standing at a podium in front of a troop of police officers. "And that will never be possible if we allow crime to run rampant in our communities, robbing people in places like Workington of the safety and security they need to live a successful life. That, my friends, is why this Government is passionate about backing the police."

The Home Secretary continued by highlighting the specifics of the Government new "A Force for Good," recruitment campaign. "Looking to the past, or trying to recreate what we've done in the past, just isn't going to cut it," Mr. Croft explained. "That's why we're not looking to return to pre 2010 levels of police officers, but to expand them. Within 5 years, this Conservative Government will put an unprecedented 25,000 police officers onto the streets." Mr. Croft explained that every community across England and Wales would benefit from the Government's plan, with newly recruited police officers being assigned to all 43 police forces.

"I came to Workington today because I know that communities across the North West have been hit hard by rising knife crime," the Home Secretary continued. "The rising rates of knife crime here, surpassed only by London, is wholly unacceptable. We have heard your rightful concerns, and we are responding. As your Home Secretary, as a member of this Government, I am here today to tell you that we have listened and are delivering on your priorities."

Mr. Croft concluded his remarks by talking about the impact on crime reduction that the new 25,000 police officers will have on Workington and communities around North West England. He then met with the local police chief and the police officers who attended the event, in addition to the large number of individuals who came to hear his remarks.
