Hayes- Former Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell and candidate for Labour’s Mayoral Nomination, John McDonnell, on “creating a London for the many”

During his time as Shadow Chancellor, McDonnell often talked about giving power to the people and creating a society for the many. His aim as London mayor is to achieve that for the people of London. Speaking today, the MP for Hayes & Harlington said “London can set the example of what radical change we can achieve to improve the lives of people across Britain. We must be brave and bold in tackling the issues that face the people of London today”

When going into further depth about his plans as London Mayor, the former Shadow Chancellor said “We must put improving transport links as an absolute priority. The economic hub of London is at the centre, while it is vital that we level up wealth in the different regions of London, a long term part of that strategy is giving people greater job opportunities and improving TFL will be a vital part in doing so”.

The veteran left wing MP also spoke about the need for changes to housing, stating “London has the highest rents and house prices in the country, but while that is the reality for prices, the reality for families is that they are unaffordable. These prices are increased further by Non-dom buyers getting property and leaving it empty. To tackle this we need to get price controls for rents. Solving London’s housing crisis is an absolute must.”

Finally, McDonnell spoke about the need for tackling the “great inequality we see in the city”. The former Chair of Finance in the old London GLC said “London is a city of both the super rich, with our city having one of the highest numbers of millionaires in the world, and the deeply impoverished who cannot afford to get by, as well as many middle income earners who are struggling to keep up at this time. It is time we did more tackle these deep issues of inequality within London, setting an example for the rest of Britain to show what we can do if we take radical action against the issues that face our society”

Battersea- Dawn Butler and Marsha de Cordova say John McDonnell is the right person for mayor

Today, Labour MP for Hayes & Harlington John McDonnell received endorsements for two Labour London MPs in his bid to become Mayor of London. Dawn Butler, MP for Brent Central, and Marsha de Cordova, MP for Battersea, announce their support for the McDonnell for London campaign.

Speaking to the press, Dawn Butler stated that “having worked closely with John over my time in parliament, including in the Shadow Cabinet, I know he is a man of integrity and decency. He has an ambitious vision for standing up for the working class voices of London and he is the best person to stand up for London against this Tory government”

Additionally, local MP Marsha de Cordova said “John played an integral part in creating the manifesto that led to Labour, against the odds, receiving our highest vote share increase since 1945. He helped create the message about improving equality in 2017 which was so successful and he has carried over much of that messaging to this London race, creating a fairer and more equal London, tackling the issues that affect our city”

Southwark- John McDonnell talks about the issue of Knife Crime in London

Today, John McDonnell spoke in Southwark about tackling the epidemic of knife crime in London. During his time in the borough, he said “Southwark, like many other boroughs in London and communities across our country, has been greatly affected by the spike in knife crime. This spike is in no small part down to the consequences of brutal austerity that has affected all of us over the last decade. It has caused poverty and deprivation to skyrocket and it has taken it’s toll”.

“To tackle this epidemic, we must take action at the root causes. They include ensuring disadvantaged children don’t fall in with the wrong crowd. This means we must do more for extracurricular activities and in education, and as mayor of our city I will put the pressure on this government to take more urgent action in breaking this cycle as part of a long term strategy.”

Additionally, McDonnell said “As London Mayor, I will commission an independent report into how we can tackle knife crime and other forms of violent crime at a city-wide level and what action I, as Mayor, should take.”

Adding to this, he said “I will also stand up to this government for their record of trying to tackle crime on the cheap. They have not done enough and I will be a voice for London to get the real investment in working communities it needs to tackle the urgent issue of knife crime among other issues that this government’s austerity policies have caused”

McDonnell Rallies for Housing Justice

Brent- John McDonnell, the former Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer and current mayoral candidate, spoke at a rally alongside tenants’ rights activists, outlining his housing policy - a crucial facet of his London for the Many campaign.

The veteran MP began his speech denouncing the structural and political forces that turned “our city into one of the most grotesquely unequal places on the planet.” asserting that today’s London has become “a play-pen for the obscenely rich and connected, a city where luxury units sit empty, acting as mere investment tools,” while “working Londoners, the people who make our city run, are condemned to outrageous rent burdens and precarity.”

McDonnell, then pivoted to how London has the ability to demonstrate to the world what a city built on housing justice looks like, asserting “the misery and despair that so many renters have been forced to experience is not inevitable, nor is it necessary - it was a political choice”, the former Deputy Leader of the GLC continued, “fortunately that means we can make choices to build a London for the Many. We can adapt many of the ambitious policies that transformed the debate around housing in our 2017 manifesto to London.”

“Specifically, as Mayor I will fight to cap rent increases, allocate our city’s resources away from subsidies to the rich and powerful and toward building more affordable, social housing units, as well as using both the formal and symbolic power that accompanies the position of Mayor as a pedestal to demand immediate action from the Government to further relieve rents, crack down on slumlords, invest in social housing, and secure real justice for the victims of Grenfell.”

The MP for Hayes and Harlington concluded his remarks by expressing his regret that “while we just missed out on an opportunity to fundamentally transform Britain for the many, not the few” referencing the remarkable 2017 general election result, “there is still time to win this radical transformation for working people in London, but a bold, radical vision is necessary if we want to achieve housing justice.”
