Government Supports UK 2030 FIFA World Cup Bid

Image

Today, the Prime Minister, Grant Kingston, and Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Aled Llewellyn, met with the Chairman of the Football Association, Greg Clarke, to give their support for a UK wide 2030 FIFA World Cup bid.

Both Ministers gave their support to the UK bid, and the Prime Minister said that the Government would help the bid in any way needed. The Prime Minister had this to say:
“I believe hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup throughout the UK would be a very proud moment for everybody, much like we saw with the 2012 Olympics. It promotes the British spirit we all love, and reminds us of what makes our nation great - something we can all rally round. The Home Nations’ Football Associations have the Government’s full support, and we will help them in any way we can. Let’s bring football home!”
Secretary Llewellyn continued Prime Minister Kingston’s sentiment, by saying:
“A lot of things have changed since the United Kingdom last hosted a World Cup, as England did in 1966. The Union is entering a new chapter in history and a great way to enter this new era would be a World Cup hosted by the whole United Kingdom: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland!”

Government Legislates to Make Remembrance Day a Bank Holiday

Image

Today the Government put legislation before the House of Commons that would make Remembrance Day a bank holiday in the United Kingdom. This would mean the 11th November (12th November if the 11th is a Sunday) would be observed as a bank holiday, and a true day to remember those who gave their lives in duty to the country.

Prime Minister, Grant Kingston, had this to say:
“The United Kingdom has long observed Remembrance Day as a day of memorial for those members of our armed forces who gave their lives to protect the freedoms of our great country. This year will be the 102nd anniversary of the end of the First World War, when the armistice was struck in the 11th hour, of the 11th day, in the 11th month. I believe that it is long overdue that we make this a true day of remembrance, and officially make it a bank holiday to allow people to take time out of their normal lives, to give time to properly and respectfully remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their families, friends, and the United Kingdom.”

Deputy Prime Minister opens work on new aircraft carrier

Image

The Deputy Prime Minister, Juliet Manning, today visited Rosyth Dockyard in Scotland to celebrate the commencement of building work upon the United Kingdom’s third Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers, which the Government today announced would be christened “HMS Duke of Edinburgh.”

Paying tribute to the workmanship of BAE Systems employees at Rosyth, Ms Manning said “this is a world-class facility which has already launched two world-class aircraft carriers; today, work begins on a third.”

The Deputy Prime Minister said that the completion of HMS Duke of Edinburgh would leave Britain “able to deploy airborne and maritime forces simultaneously in up to three different theatres,” adding that the decision to build the carrier was “a testament to the government’s commitment to defence - and to Britain’s commitment to her allies.”
