LABOUR’S SHADOW BUDGET PROTECTS UK RURAL AND COASTAL COMMUNITIES

WESTMINSTER -- Ethel Pierson, MP for Dagenham and Shadow EFRA Secretary, slammed the Conservative budget today for failing to deliver funds to protect the UK’s rural and coastal communities. Contrasting the Government’s budget with the one presented by Labour, Ms. Pierson said, “With Brexit, we would lose millions in subsidies that go to our rural and coastal communities from the EU. The Labour budget continues these subsidies and the Tories don’t.”

The Conservative budget cuts to rural and environment are doubled by the loss of EU subsidies, totalling a cut of 4.5% of the current budget. Without these funds, Ms. Pierson explains, “this Government would place our farmers and those in coastal areas mired in neglect.” The EU Single Market would give European farmers a huge competitive advantage in the world that would put British farmers at a disadvantage. “If we are to move forward after Brexit, we have to give our farmers the tools and support they need so our products can compete abroad,” explained Ms. Pierson. “This budget reflects the Government’s continued commitment to neglect our farmers and neglect our coastal communities. We can ill afford a Government that will leave our own farmers playing catch up with the rest of Europe.”

“With the Labour Party - as our Shadow Budget demonstrates - these communities would be better served,” Ms. Pierson continued. “One size does not fit all when it comes to the coast and country. After all, the challenges faced by people living in North Norfolk are different from those in the Highlands of Scotland, which are, in turn, different from those in the Vale of Glamorgan. Despite popular perception, "rural" can mean wealthy or deprived, agricultural or industrial, mobile or immobile, young or old.”

With EU subsidies going away and the Conservative budget not providing anything to replace them, the UK’s farmers and coastal communities stand to lose competitiveness sharply in the world market. Ms. Pierson said that the Labour Shadow Budget would lead to a “renewed” agricultural sector producing healthy food at home and abroad, and improve the environment in the country. “Labour’s budget would go beyond slicing and dicing funds to safeguarding the countryside and our coasts, while also supporting good food and animal welfare,” said Ms. Pierson.
