Business, Innovation and Skills, Universities, Transport and Housing Questions

The most publicly-viewed, and least productive, part of the Parliamentarian's day when Ministers of the Crown are brought in front of the opposition and summarily raked over the coals. Of course, nothing is ever really asked and nothing is ever really answered, but it makes for good theatre.

Madame Speaker,

I would like to ask honourable gentlewoman if she and the government intends to lower the Humber Bridge tolls? She must be extremely aware of the problem and burden of these tolls provide to Humberside and East Riding of Yorkshire and I would like to know if she would use her considerable powers to actually improve lives of our constituents in both of our constituencies.

Madam Speaker,

I thank the Honourable Lady for her question. As someone who has lived on both sides of the Humber, I do know the impact bridge tolls on the area, particularly for those who need to access medical treatment or care on the other bank. The Government will be consulting with local representatives and organisations to find what the most effective approach to tolls are for the area, while recognising there are limits to the things we can do. It is also important to ensure that we look at tolls cross-nationally to see if there are related issues to what we see in the Humber in other parts of the country. I will endeavour to keep the House informed on action that we take.

Madam Speaker,

Can the Secretary of State outline for the House what criteria will be used to determine the annual seven stations that will be reopened and how long the Government will continue with this scheme?
