FACTIONS:
Conservative Party
No Turning Back Group: Your garden variety Thatcherite, loves the free market, deregulation, and has a social conservative streak. This group is divided on Europe, much like that Thatcherite members of the government were (remember, at this point in time Major and Howe were Thatcherite and pro-Europe).
Tory Reform Group: The Wets of the Conservative Party. They ascribe to a more "one nation" view of the Conservative Party. Most likely to be pro-Europe.
Bow Group: The traditional conservatives, who, for lack of a better analogy, believe in flag, faith, and family. They are most likely to oppose further European integration, have a healthy social conservatism streak, and can be a bit more mixed on other issues.
Monday Club: The most right-wing of the Conservative factions, they represent what could be described as a paleoconservative vanguard. This group is in favor of firm limits on immigration, socially conservative, and resolved (at some point in the 80s) to support the core economic tenants of Thatcherism.
No Turning Back: 133 MPs
Tory Reform: 124 MPs
Bow Group: 87 MPs
Monday Club: 28 MPs
Labour Party
Tribune Group: The soft left of the Labour Party in the Kinnock mold. These are the arguably democratic socialist members of the party.
Labour First: The traditional right of the Labour Party, supporting things like a robust defence (including the nuclear deterrent) and Labour's close connection with the trade union movement. These are your Denis Healeys and Jim Callaghans.
Socialist Campaign Group: The Tony Benns of the world - still influential in the Labour Party. Represent Labour's left flank.
Progressives: Associated with the 1988 founding of IPPR, these are the people who eventually brought about New Labour. Just starting to rise, they are quite small at this point in time.
Tribune: 90 MPs
Labour First: 84 MPs
SCG: 37 MPs
Progressives: 18 MPs
