BIO: Matty was born into a middle-class family in suburban Manchester. His father was a teacher and his mother worked as a NHS pediatric nurse. Matty was always academically gifted but his main passion was indie music. He took up bass guitar in his younger years and spent his high school years working in his town's small record shop. He eventually started a band named The Thames that had a song played a few times on John Peele's show and - as a dream come true - also opened one time for Travis. However, the band wore its course as the members all attended separate universities or took up jobs.

Matty attended the University of Leeds where his studies focused on political science and economics. After a few stints serving as an aide to various Labour MPs and researchers for largely centrist think tanks, Matty took up office in the last election in 2007.

He's known for his enthusiasm and earnestness and has been described as a "puppy dog eager to please who sometimes needs a whack with a rolled up newspaper when he wets the floor."
