Further Details

Began in politics very young. Father was a backbencher politician (Labour - Leicester East, 1987-1997). Joined Young Labour at 14, and rose to East Midlands Representative and eventually became National Chair at 18 in 1980. Spent a year campaigning for labour and volunteering round the country and helping with various charities (NYA, Oxfam and Wildlife Trust). After a year of enrichment, applied and successfully read Jurisprudence at Christ Church College Oxford. Studied Law with German Law, and was a member of OULC - spending 1 year as secretary and final year as chair. Spent 1985-1988 as a defence barrister in criminal law, continuing with local activism and remained a member of Labour Party. Spent 1989 at Edinburgh University, and gained an LLM in European Law. Then spent 3 years gaining Prestige as a lawyer in European Law at Clifford Chance. Eventually moved on to CJEU, and in 1994 was nominated as UK's judge and advocate-general. Met his wife there and they married, giving up his career in law in 2000 and returned to hometown of Leicester. Spent a year looking after first child, and campaigning around Leicester for Labour. Ran for election in 2001 and elected to represent Leicester West. Served as Secretary of State for Constitutional Affairs and then for Culture - is currently out of the Cabinet since 2005.
