Conservative Leadership candidate Marcus Drummond-MacBeath gave a statement to the press outside Conservative Central Headquarters following the announcement of the results of the second ballot.

Quote:“Let me first begin by paying tribute to Mr MacMillan for a well fought campaign. I have spoken to him personally and offered my commiserations on the result. He was an excellent opponent and I look forward to working with him no matter what happens.
I must say that the result came as a bit of a shock to me, as someone new to the spotlight of politics I had somewhat underestimated the support I had from my colleagues but I feel that my success has been as a result of my desire to reach across the aisle to colleagues from all wings of the party. Given the recent public and apparent divides this party has shown in the events which brought about this contest and right up to the first round I think this is more important than it has ever been.
In this critical moment for both our party and our country, we need a leader who is capable of expanding individual freedoms, free trade, and the free market. I believe I am the right man for the job.
My platform has, from the start, been one that aims to build on the strong legacy that Thatcherism has left on both this party and the nation whilst also looking forward, not to the next election, but to the new millennium. We will hold true to the key beliefs that have guided us over the last decade: Low Taxation, Less Government interference, Law & Order and better-run services. But the only way the Conservative Party can remain fit for purpose and governance is to work together for an agenda that is both conservative, in the proper sense of the word, and modern. That is why if I win I will work to change what needs to be changed and conserve that which me must hold on to.
I look forward to contesting against Mr George-Grosejean in the third round, he is a formidable opponent and a great believer in standing up for his beliefs and I am convinced that no matter the result of the next round that this party will be stronger for it.”
